This has to be the stupidest 'day' that we notice each year. I never really understood enough about Feb 2nd to explain the whole point of it. I especially hate watching them yank some half sedated rodent into the cold early morning just to show him off. Then instead of asking him if he saw his shadow, the people just assume he did and then it's back into the cage for another year. It's not forecasting, it's abuse.

RIP: Don Cornelius, creator and host of the legendary musical variety show Soul Train, was found dead this morning of an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound in his home in Sherman Oaks, California. He was 75.

Introducing many Americans to soul music through his hit TV show which premiered in 1971, Cornelius helped promote the careers of such musicals icons as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Michael Jackson.

He is perhaps best remembered, even among non-viewers, for his signature catchphrase, with which he would end each show: “I’m Don Cornelius, and as always in parting, we wish you love, peace and soul!”

79-year-old Phil Warren from the UK spent 62 years to build this incredible fleet of 432 ships and 1200 aircraft, all built entirely of matchsticks and their wooden boxes. The collection includes 370 U.S. and 60 British ships and their associated aircraft.

Now 79 years of age, he began creating his first boat in 1948 when he was 17. He uses a razor blade, tweezers, sandpaper and glue. He has used more than 650,000 matchsticks to create this amazing collection of 1:300 scale models.

I haven't had a Pepsi cola in three month. I quit drinking everything except water with Crystal Light and it's exotic flavors. Today a couple of cans came with the Chinese food and I knew I had to reward myself with a glass of shaved ice. I would like to say that it wasn't a big deal but it WAS! I miss the fizz and the caramel flavoring. Sigh. I even don't drink diet carbonated drinks because the aspartame can't be trusted. However it feels better to lose weight and maintain a low blood sugar than to drink seven or eight colas a day.

As a fan of huge storms I was immediately drawn into the obsessive world of Michael Shannon's character in Take Shelter.

Here is a normal Midwestern man that lives with his deaf daughter and wife who he loves very much. Everything is normal except for his vivid dreams and hallucinations about a tornado is coming to destroy his town and his world.

How he deals with this realization and how it effects everyone around him is fascinating to watch unfold. Jessica Chastain is excellent as his befuddled wife who believes in the man if not the madness.

There are many moments of truth is this quiet movie. At times I am reminded of 'Jaccob's Ladder'.

Michael Shannon continues the mesmerizing work we saw him perform in 'Boardwalk Empire' He has strength enough to hold everyone up even as his prophetic dreams become more and more intense and terrifying.

The music in the background is less a soundtrack than a series of low frequency hums and buzzes - white noise to block out all the voices telling the main character what to do. The sound of nature also blocks substitutes oneself for actual dialogue.

I love the storm scenes and the massive power of nature. Storms are living things who act like fire...storms hate and storms kill.

This one is very hypnotic and in it's way triumphant. Take a walk in shoes of a very ordinary man to understand his reality. Then decide if he is crazy or not.

I am glad to know that my action figure 'guy' is on top of things. Just got his email informing me of these new 8 inch Mego-like figures to be released next month. Of course I have to have these. I have most all of the KISS sets released by McFarlane toys. The original KISS figures are expensive to find especially in package which is how I prefer them. I might even get the twelve inch ones if they look good.

This reminds me of the 'all you could get on one plate for five dollars' Chinese food place they had at the West Edmonton Mall food court. Only on Sunday for a few hours we would go to make our Chinese food towers. A pyramid of chicken balls or a log cabin made from spring roles were popular. We were eating leftovers for days.

Somethings shouldn't be the WORLD'S LARGEST. This combination of gum and spit that has been so lovingly built up should not be in any Guinness museum anywhere. It's an abomination. If fact I think any public display of one's DNA needs to be banned.

I once went to an exhibit of the human body at the space and science center in Edmonton and they had these medicinal jars as large as a person. Each was filmed with disgusting surprises.

Used q-tips, pee, pus, poop, cut hair, pubic hair, plus various other body excretions in fluid - each separated into their own container. I lived in fear that one of those would suddenly break open and spill their contents all over the exhibition hall.

I didn't touch anything without Purel for a month after that and I sure enjoyed being crowded in that bus all the way home - trapped with all those germy kids.

This revolting thing is a cocktail called an "Alien Brain Hemorrhage": "To make an alien brain hemorrhage cocktail, fill a shot glass halfway with peach schnapps. Attack The Block (2011)

Alien invasion movies are a dime a dozen and then there is 'Attack the Block', one of the best of the lot.

The filmmakers have come up with such a great concept that requires storytelling to grab the audience - not overdone special effects.

A cast of mainly unknowns (aside from Shaun of the Dead's Nick Frost) push this story ahead at breakneck speed. John Boyega is memorable as Moses, who leads the most loyal group of baby gangsters the movies have seen in a long time. I half hoped they would break into a wicked song and dance number. There is that much energy dripping off this cast.

The copy I watched had a subtitled track for all the street language that may been confusing to listen to at first. Over time you pick up the rhythm of the language in much the same way you do when immersed in Shakespeare.

One of the film's many strengths is how sure of itself it is; ATTACK never waits for the audience to catch up with it. It's refreshing to see ideas and thrills explode from the screen at such a furious pace, with barely enough time to catch a breath. The film utilizes practical creature effects (as opposed to the rampant use of CGI found in most recent works), which work well with the old school feel that the film wears proudly on its sleeve.

The alien creatures are themselves just one step above a guy in a gorilla suit but boy are they effective. Less is definitely more in this case.

This movie is an excellent example of great editing and cinematography and doing everything with camera tricks, angles and lighting, that are old as the movies themselves. This is creativity and effort with crowd pleasing results.

Chills and thrills with characters you will care about. Am I saying this movie is a classic? Yes. In terms of great story, believable setting, spectacular low budget film making, it is. I would put this on a double bill with 'Monsters' (2010) and call that a great day at the movies.

I loved it.

Cool Snow Sculpture Competition

When I was a kid the bases we lived on always had a winter festival. One of the events that was popular was the snow sculpture completion. The rules were simple. After five days they judged the sculptures by driving around the houses to see what you had come up with.

There were all kinds of categories for units, departments, schools, families, kids, and individuals. Basically everyone got a participation ribbon. I don't remember anyone coming up with anything so elaborate as the ones featured in the video, however.

I wish I had Calvin and Hobbes at that time. We could have been inspired to come up with some gruesome snowman tableaux. As it was we just tried to roll the largest snowballs we could to made the biggest snowman we could.

It was always a panic figuring out how to put all the stuff on the snowman's face from so far off the ground until we figured out we could do the face BEFORE we attached the head to the rest of the body.

Things went to a whole new creative level after that.

Hammer Films only seem to get better with time. They so define an age of American horror film making that they are almost their own genre of film.

Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee - were there ever two more reliable film stars. You know just what you are getting the second they appear on screen.

They had a way of making Easter Europe look really grim.

"Yeh sure baby. Now put your shirt back on."

I can't get enough of the hammy overacting. Nothing is every subtle or subtext in a Hammer film.

Test tubes filled with colored water is just so set designer showing off.

The plot is goofy but creepy. I liked seeing the results of the encounters with the Gorgon. How anyone didn't immediately come to that conclusion once a 'person had been turned to stone' that they had a Gorgon on their hands is beyond me. Even ignorant 18th century Easter European peasants knew their Greek myths.

The sound and music are all top notch. It feels like a stage production with the over the top make-up, hammy over acting and garish color pallet. It's like some child just got his hands on a color movie camera. It's interesting to look at.

The make-up is delightfully distracting.

I love the way the peasants in their Sunday best coming to burn the place down until the police (who don't chase any of their rioters down) show up. Small town ignorant provincial monster protectors.

The castle is sufficiently run down and spooky with the sudden sounds and wind only adding to the terror. When you are ten and watching this movie at 2 am, it can freak you out a bit.

This one reminded me of the matinee movies we went to on the base when we were kids.
