This Is High School

I was lucky enough to teach during a time before cell phones. I watch this documentary series and realize how much more b.s. kids have to go through when they have these tools to destroy other kids with a text that can spread throughout the rest of the school in seconds. It's sad to watch kids being tormented by the technology that they were raised with and should be used for good but more than often it only allows the worst instincts of the kids who can easily be bullies. I am sure I acted irrational at times but nothing like some of the kids in this show. I don't think I could even teach in a high school anymore. I have lost the ability to operate in that jungle and I used to be GREAT at navigating all the moments that come with a job in the snake pit.

I HATED Junior and Senior High School! My life was made miserable by bullies for YEARS in a time when school administrators paid no attention to such activities. (And arguably still don't, despite the lip service. When my partner's son was being bullied in his first year of High School, the Principal had the nerve to tell us that it was impossible because there were NO BULLIES AT HER SCHOOL!! I shit you not!) I have no doubt that my suffering would have been increased exponentially by the existence of cyber technology and I probably would have been one of those who would not have survived such treatment. This activity needs to be criminalized. And before anyone feels sorry for the impact on the lives of these little fuckers who will get "caught in the system for "a little mistake", think FOR ONCE about their victims and the impact these malicious bastards have on their victims' lives!

I called it the SNAKE PIT for a reason. I was lucky. I went to a small military base school then a small school in my town so we all knew each other so it was harder to bully anyone because we didn't put up with that shit and neither did our teachers. It was a different time. You had to face what you said and their were consequences for your action. No hiding behind a screen. I was always one who stood up for bullied kids when I was a teacher and even threatened a bully who wet himself, he was that scared. I just denied everything when question by the Principal but that bastard bothered NO ONE after that. He knew I was serious.

You're a god, Cal! I wish there had been more teachers like you!
