Everything, Everywhere All At Once

 

I have been a fan of Michelle Yeoh since CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON. Because she is winning all kinds of awards for her performance in this new film I had to see what all the fuss was about before the Oscars are given out this year. I need a film to root for.

This is the kind of film that cannot easily explained unless you see it for yourself. It has a very simple story about family but it tells it in a complex way that makes the MATRIX look like TENET and is full of tiny little gems of ideas that in no way should work but in the end do come together in unexpected and thrilling ways. Who knew that in one of the multiverses, humans have developed fingers that look like hot dogs? I know, how can I explain that to you unless you see it for yourself. RRR is very similar in that respect. You really do need to see it before we can talk about it.

Essentially the film is about a woman dealing with her taxes while navigating the life that her decisions has created for her. Not one of her dreams have ever been accomplished and she is certainly not the best Evelyn she could be or has become in other dimensions. It's a neat trick that pulls a lot of high concept ideas about life and living a full and rich life no matter how the cards are dealt to you. It's about wishing things were different and what happens when a chance to change the trajectory of ones life becomes a reality. It's a good thing they explain what is happening several times over in interesting and fun ways before wrapping everything in a nice neat bow at the end. It's goofy and touching and exciting all at the same time and it's energy comes from a great performance by Michelle Yeoh and the rest of the talented cast.
