Even though she is batshit crazy and has a really creepy relationship with her brother Quicksilver I always had a thing for the Scarlet Witch. Even back when she joined the Avengers cause the X-men weren't good enough for her. Sure she has imaginary babies with an android and reeked havoc across much of the Marvel Universe but who of us hasn't? This is an awesome sculpt of her though.
How can I ever use ordinary salt and pepper shakers again after seeing these Russian metal sculptures. Another reason I should have taken metal shop in high school. Now combine that with the mystical and arcane knowledge I acquired in Home Ec and I could have parlayed my skill set into gold baby, GOLD.
And there shall come...A THUNDER FROG!!! Villians everywhere are shaking in their booties and on their lilly pad homes. Because a frog with a big hammer doesn't play, bitches. But I thought Thor WAS the Thunder Frog? Loki turned him into a frog and when Thor touched his magic hammer he was transformed. They better have a good reason for ANOTHER frog getting the honor. Will it be like Beta Ray Bill where Odin made him a special hammer? I can't wait until May to have my questions answered. I am a busy man. I have a life. Well not really. I am a sad sad person who worships a frog god of thunder. Gives me the vapors just to think about it.
I am a sucker for stories like this where cats predict earthquakes or find lost babies in the snow. This one is about a cat who seemed to predict his owner's sickness. Just to show you that kitties are not just good for keeping the mummies at bay. Lets see an emotionally shallow, non-magical animal like a dog do something like THAT!
"Lionel Adams poses with his pal Tiger, whom he credits with helping save his life by alerting him to what doctors discovered was a large tumour on one of his lungs. Adams says the cat's persistent pawing at his side convinced him to see his physician, who discovered the disease through an X-ray. (Mike Drew, Sun Media)"
Dark Roasted Blend features some great examples of Medieval Armor that we all wish we could display in our stately Wayne manor homes. Who hasn't wanted to have one of these JUST to actually put it on one day. Though I understand it would be exhausting to even climb the back stairs fully armored. You would feel pretty badass and invincible in one of them. Well, until someone invents gunpowder and your tin ass becomes one big slow moving target trying to climb your back stairs.
Talk about selling yourself to a prospective employer. This guy obviously has no problem playing up his skill set and to be honest with you if I would at least want to interview this go-getter and self-starter. This kid got moxie I tells ya. And you never know when an employees experience in the fishing (?) and shipping (?) business and an in-depth understanding of security just might come in handy. But I would be suspect of all those BC and Mexican reference.
From Jill Pantozzi comes word of this awesome vampire hunter's kit. Who wouldn't want to carry this around as we travel the post apocalyptic wastelands killing vampire zombies?
HAS BOOBS, READS COMICS (http://www.thenerdybird.com/)
"A complete and authentic vampire killing kit — made around 1800 and complete with stakes, mirrors, a gun with silver bullets, crosses, a Bible, holy water, candles and even garlic, all housed in a American walnut case with a carved cross on top — attained $14,850 in the Jimmy Pippen estate sale by Stevens October 3–4 in the new Natchez Convention Center."
From Threadless (http://www.threadless.com/)comes this great representation of all the various super villians one may come across while fighting crime.
I seem to be on this theme tonight and after checking out THE POP CULTURE ADDICT site (http://www.popcultureaddict.com/) which has many Canadian based entries I was reminded of the awesomeness that is Catherine Clarke the daughter of politician and PM wannabee Joe Clark. Its seemed for most of my life that he was always in opposition and only served as PM for about four months until his government got the boot. Not the best looking man in the world his beautiful daughter somehow avoided getting any of his genetic material. A baby must have been switched at birth but I don't want to push that theory because it may have cost us the opportunity to view this truly angelic beauty. She would always wear sweaters and boots even in the summer and we can all agree that is the right look for any good Canadian girl. And as cute as Belinda Stronach is, Catherine made her look like dog food. She has since disappeared from the public eye but she can come back anytime. For that pillow fight with Shania Twain. MMMMMMMM
Yeh I know I should be living under a bridge and that I look like Shrek's less attractive brother but I am totally in love with this cute girl and her electric violin. Like Sherlock Holmes I harbor a deep desire to play the violin and meet a funky bad ass hip hop chick. Well maybe he preferred a funky bad ass Victorian chick but trust me, one look at this girl's moves and he would have been a convert to my way of thinkin. She just tears it up bitches! Hip Hop needs less matching sweat suit wearing idiots and more electric violin.
By digital artist Meats Meier - yes his name is 'Meats' - Ah those wacky artists. But his stuff is very detailed and funky and makes me wish I could do something as complex and creative.
This was another of the movies that were very popular when videos first became popular and thus were watched by me and my friends a thousand times. Watching it today I find it stands up amazingly well. After 30 years and its own video game, action figures and comic book series it has definately cemented its place in pop culture. Directed by Walter Hill in 1979 its like a live action gang comic book with each of our 'tribes' having a unique look and point of view. How many Halloweens have we seen a group of buddies dressed as the New York Baseball Furies. For those of you who have been living under a rock the story is simple. Cirus, the leader of the largest gang in New York City has declared a gang truce and invited all the gangs to send representatives to a meeting where he will unveil his plan to take over the city. The Warriors under their leader, Cleon go to this meeting but when Cirus is killed by an assassins bullet, the Warriors are accused of the crime and have to "bop" their way back across the city to their turf of Coney Island and the Atlantic Ocean. In their way are all the gangs who have been alerted to their 'crime' by the largest gang - the Gramercy Riffs. With its low budget grit and realistic fight scenes it was a pared down adventure story with a simple premise - just get home to Coney Island. The director was smart to give each of the warriors (and the gangs they encounter) distinct personalities and motivations. You get caught up in rooting for them to succeed while despising the small timers who originally put the target on the back of the Warrior, forcing them to run the gauntlet in the first place. This leads to a very satisfying ending and perhaps the best song - In the City - that Joe Walsh ever put out. The ending is also bittersweet because although the Warriors survived, they are back where they started from which is nowhere. You get the feeling they are better than the gang life they have been living because we have seen their honor, loyalty and bravery.
In the wake of Batman RIP where Batman is assumed to be dead (yeh right, the only death permanent in comic books are Uncle Ben and Bucky and Bucky is back to life now)we are getting many comics that show the reactions to Batman's death by those closest to him. And none were more close to him than Alfred his faithful manservant. Well more than a butler and no less a father to Bruce, there is no Dark Knight without Alfred. This page from the OUTSIDERS SPECIAL is awesome because we all get to hear Bruce say to Alfred what we always hoped he would but never did. Gotta admit I needed a tissue but only because I got some dust in my eye bitches! Made me miss my own father all the more because of the support he always gave me for my obsessions. Love you Dad.
Thanks to my blog buddy Darius at Adventures in Nerdliness (http://adventuresinnerdliness.blogspot.com/) comes this site that wants to hear all about our childhood traumas. Cute but sick so here goes...for me it was Jack in the Boxes with their non-musical 'clink clink clink' before the deformed puppet jumped out of the box. I used to dream of a large one in my front yard that would pull me back inside of the box to kill me. And yes it was a clown Jack in the Box. Why is it always a clown Jack in the Box? Even that Jack guy that sells burgers on TV gives me the willies. But nothing got to me more than one night when I fell asleep as a kid while watching TV with my folks. When I woke up this National Film Board of Canada short was playing and I couldn't even breath I was so paralyzed with fear. Fuck you NFB and your multicultural mosaic! They often show it when they need to fill a minute of air time and I usually watch it to the end just because I can't get my fingers to work the remote and I think that if I do turn the channel they will know and come for me later. And that renaissance flute music? Positively bone chilling!
There is only one thing cooler to a new blogger than having someone comment on a post that you made - to be quoted by someone you left a comment for (in this case about also having plenty of Bee Gees in my record collection). I was one of the comments of the week for the awesome Michael Mays Adventureblog and it made me giggle like a schoolgirl without panties. Like Googam all I want is to be loved.

"I am totally unashamed to say that between the two of us we probably have the worst record collection ever." -Calvin (of the Canadian Cave of Cool), commenting on my recent choices in the music meme.
What had to come together in the universe to create a pop icon like Mr. T? Never was a fan of Dukes of Hazard but totally bought into the stupidity of the A-Team. No wonder the army never found them - that look just allowed T to blend into the crowd. Sure he was ridiculous looking but you gotta admit his heart was always in the right place. And even though he may have fallen on hard times you never heard of him involved in a scandal involving his exposed wiener in a porno theatre. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
I taught for almost 20 years but never saw a classroom like this one in Ziyun, China. While to some it may seem harsh I can't help but admire the way the Chinese adapt to their needs and conditions. I would find such an enviroment educationally stimulating. First built in 1984 it now accomodates 186 students with a teaching staff of 8. They even have a basketball court.
Okay okay, although I totally hate hate hate Valentine's Day because of my own issues I do love this card from that famous Simpson's episode. The greatest Ralph Wigum performance ever. If you make both Selma AND Patty wet then you got something going on baby. ("Now THATS a man!") Nobody ever loved me that much to get me anything special for Valentine's day. Do I care? Yes. Am I jealous and is the Well of my Bitterness full to overflowing? Yes. Do I climb the water tower with my rifle? Not yet.
Now we usually see action figures follow the comic but for once I would like to see a comic follow these action figures. Created by Joshua Izzo and Bruce Ross they are the Victorian/Steampunk versions of the Marvel heroes we all know and love. These are customs but would soooo fit into the Marvel's Legends line or a new WHAT IF line should anyone smart wish to take up the challenge. You could set the tale in Victorian England and work around Jack the Ripper or Nathanal Essex (Mr Sinister) and easily incorporate the Children of the Atom if only they had come about 100 years before they did in Marvel history. Jack the Ripper as a mutant serial killer? See how fabulous my ideas are? Hell we would even love a 1602 line based on the Neil Gaiman/Andy Kubert comic of the same name. Found these on this great site which often features great custom figures.
I was reminded today by blogger Ben Varkentine of A Dragon Dancing With The Buddha (http://varkentine.blogspot.com/) how much I loved the album DARE by the HUMAN LEAGUE back in the eighties. I wore that tape out on my walkman and it singularly saved my summer back in 1982. I was working at cadet camp in Penhold Alberta and any time we could get away from all the marching and yelling with some good music it was the best part of the day. My roomate wore out AC/DC Back in Black and DARE was my way of wiping those three cord songs from my mind. Not that I didn't enjoy AC/DC far but sometimes you need synthesizers and drum machines to even out the madness. If you look at the picture I use of me for this blog it is DARE on the Walkman I am listening to.
"When flipping through the annals of new-wave history, one can easily enough overlook the entry marked "Human League". But the truth of the matter is, this Phil Oakey-helmed synth-pop outfit was crucial to the movement, and Dare!, its third release, is an absolute linchpin. Thanks to its breakthrough single "Don't You Want Me", the record almost single-handedly made it safe to like new wave, and an MTV video gave it a fashionable face that was impossible to ignore. The sound was theatrical and awash with kitschy keyboards, but felt new and refreshing back in 1982The League would never climb to such hooky aesthetic heights again; Dare! ranks as its greatest achievement--and it still sounds new and refreshing today. --Tom Lanham"
Love this print by Batman cover artist Dustin Nguyen. It would be great to see him design a whole cartoon in his style. I like the pencil crayon coloring the most.
So what you are saying to me is... since I am a blasphemous, athiestic, whormonging, masturbator I am fucked? Shit, glad I am not also a drunk, pot smoking, lesbian, sports fan.
I forever stand vigilant to protect this planet from the myriad of forces that are always against us. Be it the octopus, zombies, aliens or the robots my team of human agents, and our feline allies, circle the globe in a never ending struggle for human freedom.
I learn all I can on every subject that interests me. I especially enjoy ancient history because in the past there are valuable lessons to be found. Also, if I ever get my time machine to work properly, it would be good to know a bit about possible destinations and what to expect when I get there.
I greatly appreciate beautiful design. Be it manufactured or found naturally I am fascinated by the process of invention. I am attracted to the unique, the strange, the haunted. I like to share what I find on this blog.
And not let us forget the 'Cephalopod Menace' who, if allowed to, would wrap their tentacles around all that is good and pure in this life and crush it until it remained no more. They are creatures of pure spite. Hate is all they know. Death is all they do. They are our most ruthless and determined enemy.
So we fight. Selena has the celebrity contacts, the cat is ruthless and without pity, Roosevelt's ghost has the experience and I do the wetwork.
Fighting for the future of the planet doesn't have to be a chore, however. We can take the time to appreciate all that is cool in this world even as we cut the octopus into bite sized chunks.
This is the reason there has always been and must forever be, a Cave of Cool. Be sure to wipe your feet before you enter.
