Neil insists that he doesn’t play with dolls – GI Joes are action figures! They have 26 articulated parts! And he says that his love for GI Joe only puts him on the borderline of weird. He’s not one of those strange GI Joe guys who like to wear costumes – he just happens to love every single GI Joe and Adventure Team action figure and accessory put out b...y Hasbro between 1964 and 1976.
Neil was born in 1966 – 2 years after GI Joe hit the market - as the youngest of 7 brothers. He played with GI Joe constantly and thought of him as his best friend. By the time he was 12, Neil had accumulated a refrigerator box full of toys. And then he made the mistake he still regrets to this day. Neil thought he was too old for toys and he gave away his entire toy box, including every single GI Joe item, to a family down the street!!! Ever since Neil became an adult, he’s scoured flea markets, junk shops and ebay, trying to put his collection back together.
And after 25 years, Neil’s collection of 400 figures and accessories fills a 10 X 10 “Joe Room”. Some of his special items include early Adventure Team action figures with complete uniforms that are now valued between $600 and $800 and a Hong Kong Joe with a rubber Godzilla suit that currently sells for as much as $900.
Although 90% of the collection is vintage, Neil has collected some contemporary items, most notably a prototype of a Tom Hanks/Saving Private Ryan action figure made by Hasbro that never went into production. Only a dozen are thought to exist - Neil bought one on ebay for $1200. He believes it would sell for up to $5,000 today.
