The Scarecrow

Those of you my age will remember a time when we had very few channels on TV compared to now. There were no specialty channel's and a movie from the theatre coming on TV was an EVENT. I remember when they first showed Star Wars on television in the late 70so. You could have shut our little base and the whole country for that matter. This was the time before the 'Age of Video'.

Sunday night's always meant two things in our house - a bath (as dad would say if we needed it or not) and 'The Wonderful World of Disney'. This was a showcase for all the best films and animation that Disney had done throughout the years. While now you have 'Pixar' and 'Dreamworks' doing great animation, in those days, Disney was the only game in town.

On father's day they showed a tribute to fathers with Goofy and Donald Duck cartoons. On the Fourth of July they got all patriotic. They would show their spectacular nature programs and of course, their best movies. These were always done in two parts.

I always hated that the film would end JUST while it was getting good and would hate waiting a whole week for the finale. But at that age, aside from Christmas and your birthday, it was the only thing you really had to wait for.

The "Scarecrow of Romny Marsh' was my favorite live action film from that show. It was set in Revolutionary times with Patrick McGoohan playing the masked hero, The Scarecrow who fought the evil British. It has a great opening song and a maniacal laugh from the Scarecrow. I was hooked.

I waited for years for Disney to release Scarecrow of Romney Marsh on DVD (it was their most requested DVD)and they finally did, i got my copy right before they sold out (it was a limited edition). Well worth the wait, the shows hold up and are still as exciting to me as they were when i was a kid.

We grew up on that show too. I still think the older Disney cartoons (Chip n Dale, Donald, Goofy etc) are some of the funniest things around. I remember Swamp Fox being a favorite.

I like Humphrey the bear but he was only in a few of those cartoons. And the two 'Casey at the Bat' films. His daughers were GOOOOD lookin'.

Chip and Dale were great until I discovered those two exceedingly polite Canadian chipmunks from Loony Tunes who would always apologize and say 'Thank You'
