That painting is a block from my apartment, in the New York Historical Society gallery, along with the other three in the series. Cal, you need to post the whole sequence; it's pretty mind-blowing. It's like a four-panel comic strip that spans 300 years. (Pay attention to the hill in the background that anchors the image, and notice how the camera swings slowly to one side over the course of the paintings.) The ostrich atop the pillar in the final canvas is a symbol for rebirth.

Okay, now that is COOL to know. I will do more research. I was just looking at this guy's stuff today and had no idea how awesome it is. Thanks for the tip. I am so jealous that you live where you do. I think my head would explode with all that input.
