Erik Johnson Illustrator said...: I took a fairy tales/European Folklore class during my senior year of college, around the time I also started reading "Fables", so I've pretty much seen every way you can make Grimm's fairy tales darker and edgier, and then we got hit with all sorts of theatrical fairy tales remade as action movies produced for name recognition. Snow White and the Huntsman was just the tip of the iceberg. We've got to deal with this plus" Jack the Giant Killer".

While I think they're deliberatly playing this one as over the top and anachronistic its still shows the worst aspects of "Brothers Grimm" and "Van Helsing".

Red Riding Hood also has been getting a lot of retellings. Although thats probably because the formula of "little girl in a strange world" is adaptable to so many other series like Alice in Wonderland or The Wizard of Oz.

If you're retelling fairy tales for a modern audience, I'd cite "Freeway" as a good example. Granted a movie like that isn't very marketable to a wide audience.; September 5, 2012 at 5:37 AM
Kal said...: For network shows I hear good things about Once Upon A Time and Grimm which all jumped on the possitive buzz around Fables which can only be done on an HBO type show. I do like the twists they put on all the characters. Especially the identity of the Adversary they fought in the first volume of Fables. That one came at me from left field.
