Faux Toys For This Summer's Secret Wars

I can't believe the note the toy company gave Marvel about Doctor Doom's iconic look - "too medieval." That is the reason Doom got the technical update and the outfit lasted only as long as the Secret Wars miniseries did. Then it was right back to the costume we all know and love. There is a reason it's never been changed in all these decades. It is perfect the way it is.

In the 80s Marvel and Mattel released action figures based on their most popular characters and the SECRET WARS comic mini-series. This was the first time that fan favorite Wolverine appeared in plastic. I rushed to the toy store but aside for a Wolverine and Captain America, I never bought into the line.

Like the Star Wars figures, 3 3/4 inch superhero figures with painted on costumes just didn't appeal to me. I found them to be a step down from the larger figures with cloth costumes that I played with all through my childhood. Another collecting regret. I should have bought the whole line at the time. This year I got a great deal for the Doctor Doom complete in package and I am always on the lookout for any figure from this line.

The following figures are not for sale but are alternate covers for the NEW Secret Wars 'event' that will take over all the Marvel titles this summer. People forget what  game changer the first Secret Wars was. Aside from the 12 issues of the main story, each title put out Secret Wars related issues. The mini-series was not self contained and several things that happened on Battleworld continued in the individual titles of the characters involved. The most famous of these being the symbiotic creature that came back as Spidey's black costume, itself becoming VENOM.

I remember those. They came out when I was in my 30s so I was a little past my figure buying stage. Course I went into second stage buying around 1996, but sorry I never picked up the Doctor.

I never really got started until the Spiderman cartoon did a Doctor Strange figure with the great cape...six inches. That got me going on my current collection of cool.

I would love to see some pictures of your stuff again.

Those Secret Wars figurines -- there's something wrong when Spiderman is bulkier than Thor fergawdssakes.

Look again. That is the girl Thor. You might not want her so bulky.

My collection is mostly gone with the wind. Just have a few favorite items left. See what I can do.
