Now It Seems Deliberate

I can hardly believe that in the new FORCE AWAKENS Monopoly game you can play many of the characters from the film but not REY. WTF? There is a problem here. I don't think it's an accident that there are so much fewer REY based merchandise than the other characters. Leia had the same problem in her trilogy as did Padme. I have ONE Padme doll in her Royal Outfit and her ordinary cloths versions but that was all I could find at the time. She is barely represent in any of the toys that came out during the Prequels. I wonder if someone at the company thinks that girls or boys won't want to play with a REY doll but that is ridiculous. She is the HERO of the whole movie. You can't play FORCE AWAKENS without her.

The Disney label all but guarantees that little girls will be interested in the product and the characters, especially REY. She could be considered a Disney princess for all intents and purposes. She comes from a long line of Star Wars related heroines. Why does she not have her OWN doll in the style of the ones from FROZEN? Is it because she only wears on outfit throughout the entire movie? She should be front and center on all advertising and should be represented in ANY toy line. You know for sure that FUNKO created a REY POP before they worried about a Luke Skywalker, who in this pictured here in his RETURN OF THE JEDI outfit for the new Monopoly game. HUH? Only Darth's burnt helmet appears in FORCE AWAKENS but there he is front and center on the game board. This is also not an effort to make REY figures more rare and thus more valuable. Wonder Woman's latest figure as last year's Black Widow figure are almost impossible to find at retail. I know I am always amazed when I can find a female figure from any line on the TRU shelves. They are just never made in the same numbers as the male figures. Maybe if girls could find more girl dolls/figures on the shelves, they would be more into superheroes. It seems like the world wants to force girls away from these properties.

In Star Wars: The Force Awakens Monopoly you can choose to play as one of four male characters from the Star Wars franchise — Luke Skywalker, Finn, Kylo Renn or Darth Vader. But there’s no sign of the film’s protagonist, Rey.

The inclusion of Vader instead is particularly disappointing as he doesn’t even appear in the most recent film, unless you count his mangled helmet. It really makes you think when a symbolic death mask is viewed as more significant than the female lead.

This discovery comes off the back of a disappointing visit to toy aisles where I have been endlessly scouring shelves for Rey merchandise.

Potential loot so far includes a couple of t-shirts, a plush toy, an action figure with her speeder and some adorable kid’s costumes. Rey is definitely existent in some merchandise, but her presence is in no way comparable to the amount of products emblazoned with the male characters from the film.

I think this eight year old sums it up best:

I'm with you! I love strong female characters and to see them blatantly disregarded or omitted from "boy's" products is nothing short of unacceptable. Again, Disney finds another way to undo the hard work I've done in showing my 6 year old son that female characters are just as strong and important as their male counterparts. Screw you, mouse.

You're absolutely right, Cal. Send this post to Disney! And to Marvel while you're at it. And to whoever produces the DC movies.

I third the motion. To leave her out of the Monopoly game
but have Vader in there is just incredibly wrong. I almost
can't believe they did that. Very misogynistic. The Disney I grew up with in the 50s and 60s is sadly gone. And the Monopoly people can
just bite me.
