Modern Easter also borrows a lot from the Anglo Saxon / Germanic pagan Ostara which is also a fertility holiday that celebrates the spring equinox and rebirth.

Much like the pagan Yule, it was easier to change the name of an existing holiday when Christianity became popular than to try to create a brand new one and get everyone on board.

Assimilation people! That’s how they take over.

j-swin has it exactly right! Another name for this springtime goddess is Eostre, from whose name we get words like "estrogen," "estrus" and it looks like "Easter" itself.
