I Have No Children But...

I have taught thousands of them in my time and what I learned most is that words have extraordinary power to build or break a child. So make it a daily habit to say something good to the children in your life.

Cora did this fantastic representative piece that should hang in every school staffroom around the continent.

That is a great image.

I would use insults as a chance to increase my kids' vocabulary. If someone insulted them we would find batter, more erudite and ultimately more cutting ways to say it. Eventually they would hear an insult and say: "Is that the best you can do?"

I learned to use humor and sarcasm to affect my verbal bullies. I never felt bad about reversing their lame insults and making them cry.

I can't imagine being a kid in today's world of facebook and other social media.

My niece is having a hard time right now dealing with kids saying nasty things at school and on FB and most of the adults in her life are telling her to get tough and deal with it.

Luckily she loves her uncle and they're very close and he's encouraging her to do something similar to what you and M.D. suggest.

It's so hard these days with all the anonymous trolls out there to spread their hate. If I was a parent I would heavily monitor my kid's internet usage but if they cross the line they wouldn't have an electronic device (not even an electric toothbrush) until their 18th birthday.
