I know from early reviews that this one is supposed to be no better than a C+ but that won't keep me from watching a freakin' X-Man movie. I loves me some X-men and I am impressed with the quality of the last three movies in the franchise. It's hard if not impossible to juggle so many characters, both new and old while retaining the old stars like Fassbender, MacElvoy and Lawrence who all still are committed to their roles. They could have just phoned it in but didn't. That is something I appreciate in today's world where money trumps all.
I especially liked that the movie spent a good deal of time with the newest mutants like Cyclops, Jean Grey and Nightcrawler and didn't just toss them to one side. I was fun to see that Quicksilver is back doing what Quicksilver does best. I enjoy the way they portray his superspeed powers. Yes, it's basically a repeat of what he did in the last X-Man movie but that doesn't mean it's not a great bit. It fact all the mutant effects are top notch. Like a live action comic book come to life which is the way these mutant blockbusters should be. I don't mind the multiple storylines or the large cast of characters to juggle if you deliver the goods. This movie delivers in spades.
The short cameo by everyone's favorite mutant also didn't not disappoint. I like the way they wove comic book continuity into the X-Man movie universe with this appearance.
I was pretty jazzed about the ending too. It gave us a look at the possible next story in the franchise. The Dark Phoenix story is one that needs to be told right with the final battle taking place on the Moon just like in the comic books. X-Men in Space, anyone?
