Superman/Batman Apocalypse

Some days you discover things that just show up in your life and fill you with much much joy - so much joy that you pee your pants a little. That is how I felt when I realized that 'Superman/Batman Apocalypse' came out today. This may be the last of the DC animated films that we get to enjoy for awhile so I intend to totally soak in the experience.

I have always been a fan of the Jack Kirby created character like Darkseid and the New Gods. Darkseid especially (since the animated Superman series) has been a great foil for Kal-el. He always forces Superman to defeat him with his brains as much as his brawn since Darkseid is Superman's equal in terms of strength.

The story begins with Batman's investigation of a strange object that has crashed into Gotham Harbor. With Kryptonite meteors falling all over the earth anything from the heavens needs to be checked out. Especially when an space pod brings someone new to Earth - someone related to Superman - Kara Zor-el, Kal-el's cousin.

Always the cynic, Batman does not trust this new arrival.

As usual the animation, music, and voice work is stellar. Kevin Conroy is back as the voice of Batman and Tim Daly is Superman. Summer Glau does the voice of Supergirl for the first time. The set pieces are huge and the action is spectacular. From Gotham to Metropolis, Themyscara and of course Apocalypse, we get a full tour of the DC Universe.

The strong relationship between Batman and Superman continues from the past animated films and adds the element of family which is always a tense subject between the two having each lost so much. Wonder Woman also shows up to add a third voice to how best to deal with Kara.

I won't say anything else but I suspect if you are as big a fan of these characters as I am that you will squeal with delight many times. If you are not already a convert than nothing I can say will convince you how cool this movie actually is.
