Bruce Burrell, Calgary Emergency Management Agency director, said the bridge had dropped at least 0.6 metres (two feet) in an hour and a half. However, as of 8 a.m. MT, emergency officals said the bridge hadn't dropped in 45 minutes.

The bridge is 7.5 metres above the water, said officials.
Can you believe that the car would just happen to be carrying dangerous fuel that could land into the water supply as it blows up the bridge and half the city along the way. This seems like a big OOPSIE from those from Via Rail. You would think that someone would check the bridges, especially the RAIL bridges. Good thing it's just diesel fuel, or so they THINK. Good that nobody knows for sure, that would just spoil the surprise when the bridge collapses and it all goes further to shit. Damn, Calgary, what did you do to piss off the gods.

Well, at least the hippos are safe.
Nothing compared to the toxic crap the pipeline in northern Alberta spews out regularly, I think. I have heard they have had thousands of spills that no one gets to hear about.
It could be worse. Remember Halifax?
Just a side note; the bridge belongs to Canadian Pacific not VIA. Still, they are in the process of pumping all liquids, diesel and bitumen, from the derailed cars.
Oh I am sure they will get it cleaned up and fixed right because this is Canada. Things like this don't happen...ever but derailment after a great flood is an Act of God.
Oh and Doctor Goat, we should be cleaner but the process demands certain pollution takes place. It sucks that we have to play the fossil fuel game. But Natural Gas from Shale is making water catch on fire. The whole industry sucks. Trust me, in Canada, we have less environmental damage than you might have heard. I have seen refineries and they are impressive.

I guess in my case it is the pot calling the kettle black.
