"Top Kill' Failed. Color Me Surprised.

The time for BP's attempts to stop this oil spill on their own have come and gone. I don't know how much consultation they have done with other oil companies or experts around the world but now is the time for the best minds on this PLANET to think up a solution. BP needs to stop looking at their bottom line and needs to stop telling us lies. What are they stalling for? Each minute the spill and damage to the ocean gets worse.

I saw on TV how BP hired a bunch of workers to walk the beaches looking for 'tar balls' while the President was visiting. The second Obama left, however, these workers were no longer needed because the whole thing was just window dressing to show everyone that BP cared and was serious about beach clean-up. They don't care because even now it isn't serious enough to threaten BP's profits.

So why, at this point, are we allowing BP to do anything? They have clearly been dishonest with all of us. All these years they have used their power to avoid regulations and to fake safety reports. They have no idea how to fix the problem they created. Before one inch of pipe went into the ocean, they should have had a plan on hand to fix anything that possibly went wrong. A solution to the problem of a 'leaky' pipe should have been on the top of that list. When a situation is left to become a global crisis, BP loses the right to call any of the shots.

Their company needs to be shut down and their assets need to be seized. Those assets need to go into the hiring of smart people and paying for equipment that may be needed to shut this well off for good. No more 'top hats' no more 'top kills' and certainly no 'junk shots' which is supposedly the next idea these geniuses have. If heavy mud didn't work, what makes them think that golf balls and rubber tires will work any better?

It will already be decades if not longer for the ocean to recover from this spill. How much more damage will we need to do before all of us realize that oil dependency and greed is counterproductive to the life of this world?

The only thing that gives me any kind of hope is that this incident may push the development of green technologies further along than they are now. Electrical power, wind and solar energy projects need to be greenlit so that the need to do this risking drilling offshore won't exist anymore.

I have no doubt that this situation is far worse than BP is saying. This crude oil is apparently very high in benzene, which is a notorious carcinogen. The solvent "dispersal agent" that they have flooded into the Gulf has been banned in Europe because it damages the environment WORSE that oil itself.
This is not "a spill." This is probably a bigger environmental event than anything we've ever seen, with thousands more barrels gushing out each and every day. It'll loop the northern Gulf and then much of it will most likely flow out into the Gulf Stream. The ultimate effects can only be guessed at.
Also, the initial explosion apparently released huge amounts of methane, one of the worst greenhouse gasses. So the global warming process may have just been harshly accelerated. And I guess the whole "peak oil" time table will have to be shortened accordingly.

BP now says that the best bet will be the drilling of a second well, which will be completed by August.
Unfortunately they didn't mention how hurricane season will arrive before that. All work will have to stop, all boats will get out, and the winds and waves will then deposit all that oil and solvent wherever they want to. Hello New Orleans.

And hey, Cheney's Haliburton helped build this thing?? Is anyone surprised??

It's a crime against humanity, that's what it is. I want to see some heads roll but of course they won't. For a hundred years we will be living with the consequences of the bad decisions of the Bush Administration. Cheney is to the environment what Hitler was to the concentration camps.

I agree completely with every word here.
Only by winding up the company and taking all the profits to fix this mess will the other oil giants realise the time for complacency is long gone.
But just watch as governments cave in to the pressure that all that money brings...

Incidents like Three Mile Island and Chernobyl scared us off of nuclear power. What will it take to scare us off of oil?

Hopefully this incident will be enough to scare us off oil. If anything can. I hope the generation coming up, who have been raised with a green consciousness, will do the right things when they are in power to do so.

You had better hope that this incident does not scare us off oil. Do you like driving your car? Do you like heating your house? You can forget about that if there's no oil.

Wind power and other alternative energies (other than a renewed nuclear program) have no hope of meeting the current demands let alone future ones. If the western world gives up oil the n it's bicycles, horse drawn carts and wood burning stoves for everyone.

Good luck with that.

M.D. Jackson apparently gets all his news from FOX.

We can all keep the demon proceeds from our collective oil addiction but I really need to see some effort put into reducing that dependancy every year until we need it no longer. The oil company's are a evil that has just got to go. They are habitual line steppers and they went over the limit this time. There is no coming back from that.

Amen, brother.

Yeah, but what are you gonna replace it with? Yes, oil and dependence on it is bad, but honestly if there is no oil industry nothing is going to move.

I don't watch Fox News. I just know what I'm talking about.
