Is This Legit?

This is a coin that is more awesome than any coin has a right to be. I can understand if it was a five dollar bill since both the 'looney' (1 dollar coin with picture of a Loon on it) and the 'toonie' (two dollar coin - we Canuck are so creative) were introduced to do away with paper bills which are more expensive to make and are less durable. We don't have a four dollar paper bill so why introduce this and still keep the paper five? So obviously this is more photoshopped goodness.

Why a T-Rex you ask? Well if you know anything about Canadian history and specifically Alberta history you will know that Joseph Tyrrell (1857-1958) in the late 1800s discovered dinosaur bones in the area around Drumheller and the Alberta Badlands. Alberta was once a great inland sea during the age of the dinosaurs so many fossils were left behind over time. Only areas in China have as many found fossil artifacts. In High School our biology class would go to the Red Deer River to dig for fossils. Tiny sea creatures and plant fossils are found regularly.

Not that discovering the largest depository of prehistoric fossil was enough,Joseph Tyrrell also cross bred apples to create the 'golden delicious' brand of apples that remain among the most popular today.

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is in Drumheller and contains a fantastic collection that you really need to see to believe. Twice have I stayed overnight in the museum with a group of kids and there were moments when I thought that fricken' T-Rex was gonna come to life like in that Ben Stiller movie. Click the link to visit the museum's website.

Thanks to Brian Busby who put me onto this link. I guess these are legit but non circulating collectors coins.

No, not photoshopped goodness, but the real thing.

The T-Rex coin is one of two $4 dinosaur non-circulating coins put out by the mint.

Here's the link.

(I'm no coin nut - it was $42.95 price on the right that gave me a clue.)

Very cool indeed! Why not make them circulating pieces? Odd.
