Hate This Story
It's been a rough day for my beloved Canada. In the middle of gearing up my excitement for the Winter Olympics (and Vancouver's famous early spring) we have found out that one of our nation's military shining lights - a Colonel Russel Williams - could possible be a serial killer. He is being investigated for the murder of two woman and other sex crimes, some possible against children and other crimes going back many years. GAH!

When they do it over there, we call them heroes and say how we all gotta support them.
When they do it at home, we call them rapists and serial killers.
What exactly is the comparitive ratio? is it one Canadian/American woman= one hundred Afghan/Iraqi women and children? One Canadian/American woman= one thousand Afghan/Iraqi women and children?
This has nothing to do with that and you know it. This is about ONE psycho. My father was a soldier for 35 years and the one thing I know about them if that the last thing they want to do is hurt someone else.
VM, I kinda understand your point, but when they do it at home, they ARE rapists & killers. I, like Cal, had a Dad who was a soldier 4 yrs. during WWII. I know he bombed the very town where he was born (in Italy), I don't think he felt great about that, but when his squad came home, they all (I met a few of them at reunions) were great guys who would'nt think of hurting anyone or doing weird shit.
Well yeah I was perhaps a bit flippant there, and no disrespect to anybody's dad (including my own, who served in WWII save as everybody)
But - the society we have today bears little resemblance in many ways to what was here in the 30s. The reason that young guys enlist now is pretty different to why young guys enlisted in the 30s and 40s. And the "mission" that NATO troops are pursuing in the Middle and Near East now is VERY different from our fight against Germany and Japan was.
This time around, WE are the colossus invading weaker countries.
Interesting that on the CBC web-site they had at last check three different articles about this murder investigation, and they have disabled the comments thread for each one of them.
In other words: Read what we say, then DON'T discuss. Or think about it too hard. That is all.
