Get Your Comments In Soon. They Will Only Be Accepted For The Next Few Days
I think I will be going in this direction pretty soon - shutting off the ability for people to comment. It will be just like Tumblr that doesn't allow comments.
I find it frustrating that I can't leave any comment about what a person has posted. So many times I want to tell them that I like the same things they do. The only way they can know that I appreciate the find is by reposting it. If they also visit my blog they can see it there and know that I nicked that image from them. Having something you posted get reposted by another person is very cool to see. You get to see your blog address proudly displayed there and it might lead to more traffic back to you. What it really is is validation that someone else agreed with about what you thought was cool.
That one time when I had over 1500 visitors in one day was because of a somebody reposting something I had first posted here in the 'Cave of Cool'. Lots of people followed that link back to me. Sure few stuck around for any longer than that one visit and the next day my number went back to normal.
That made me wonder just how much anyone is enjoying what I blog about.
I love getting comments (we all do) and the conversations that they can start back and forth. Those who daily availed themselves of the option to comment on something they have seen on the 'Cave of Cool' will always have my unlimited love. The regulars I get to interact with through the comments (which really is the only measure of who is reading and appreciating the effort) are all great people. Their creativity inspires me. They never seem too busy to reply to the comments I leave on their sites. Some give no feedback at all - nearly half that I regularly visit. I will be stopping commenting on those sites too after this weekend.
You feel like a loser for always commenting and not being acknowledged. I must just make people cringe to be dismissed like that.
People like TS and Pat and Megan who get tons of comments take the time to acknowledge things I have left on their comment pages. They do this for each of the people who comment. Just a small thank you and acknowledgment. Building that relationship between bloggers.
I just am having frustrations with the lack of comments especially with opinion posts or posts in which I talk about an creative idea that I have had. To not get feedback on that stuff hurts. It's like people aren't inspired enough by my ideas. I think I would rather not expect anything then learning to deal with getting nothing.
I gave great blog all week but you wouldn't think that if you added up the comments in any given week. Hey, let's do that. Ratio of comments to post for the last 100 I have did. I average 2.69 comments for the last 100 posts I did. I have 221 regular followers.
It frustrates me that Tumblrs do not have a comment feature. There are times everyday when I want to say something about a tumble picture or start some back and forth on some topic/idea that Tumblr post inspires. I guess people on Tumblr are different than those that do just straight blogs. The nature of Tumblr with the sheer volume of posts and the emphasis on gathering the most followers can make commenting too much work for people to deal with.
I combine features from both Tumblr and straight blog. I don't comment on the stuff I just throw up there with a title and a quick sentence. Those are disposable ideas. It's the long posts, the story telling, the opinion pieces that I want the feedback on. I understand people are busy. They just want to get in, get their fix, and move on to the next blog in their roll.
Sorry for the rant. I may have repeated some parts but reading what I just said has convinced me that this is the way the 'Cave of Cool' needs to go.
So get your comments in early so that you don't miss out. It's a liquidation sale and all responses have got to go. Rock bottom prices. All sales final.

Hey Cal, say it ain't so! I enjoy reading the comments by your "regulars" *almost* as much as your posts themselves.
I must admit I don't comment as often as I'd like, for which I apologise. It may be because you're just so darn prolific that the percentage of comments to posts is so low. I wish I could drag my lazy arse away from fruitless net-surfing and be as creative and entertaining as you always are.
I'm sure you'll do what is best for you, but I'd say don't give up on your Followers just yet: they might just surprise you :-)
you get mad when people disagree saying they are not possitive...i was told not to comment
I tend to think of allowing comments as a way of letting the people who visit know that they are part of the blog. whether they decide to join in or not is up to them, but the options there. I know how you feel, though. there are many times when I posted something I thought was really cool, and then I got no comments, and it really does take the wind out of your sails a little bit, doesn't it? maybe you can just add a "Like" or "Dislike" feature. whatever you do, that's cool. I'll still be visiting.
I always end up commenting waaay too late from when the original post went up. Mostly cause I work the graveyard shift and that's when I visit (although not all the time)
I also wish that tumblr had a comments section as well.
Yet, Anonymous, here you are.
Having people feel like they are a part of the blog is what I always try to do Joe. I answer 90% of my comments. I know I like it when people respond to something I said on someone else's site. In some cases - okay one case - I answer comments on posts that I didn't even right. Its a good thing that TS doesn't mind my 'helping'.
Anyone who regularly leaves comments is welcome no matter when they put the comment in. I guess everyone has their way of doing things Sam.
Sorry to see it go, but if must be, must be, ka sara sare.
I like the comments...even if I don't leave all that many myself, comparatively speaking. But then, I don't comment much on ANYBODY's blog, for some reason!
Tumblr is a big pain in the ass many days, I have posted pics that just explode with reblogs all over the place and it's odd to see what gets a mass reblog and what dosen't. You can message a tumblr (but i've been attacked on my tumblr by a homophobic anonymous "person" on my message feature). I enjoy putting my 2 cents (canadian and us)here and always get a thrill when i see you repost one of my tumblr pics. Yours is the first blog i check and then Samuraifrog every day.
I love reading your blog, but I know I'm guilty of not commenting very often. And I don't answer back a lot of comments on my own blog, mostly because there was a period of time where it was just straight harassment from people and the fights drained my energy after a while. I felt it made me seem to whiny too others. I appreciate comments as much as all bloggers do, but I'm uncertain how to acknowledge them sometimes because, I guess, I worry too much about coming across like a jerk. Too much second-guessing myself.
I'm sorry to see you're shutting off the comments, but I completely understand why.
Drake, you and the Frog always post tumblr stuff that is relevent to my interests (like the LOL cats would say). We always have lots of crossover. I never feel let down.
I am going to agree with cerebus about the prolificity perhaps hurting your comment density.
And trust me, I totally understand the heartbreak of putting something out there that you desperately want some acknowledgment for and it seems like the sillier stuff gets all the attention.
I am a notoriously slow blogger, and there are a few posts that I worked on over days... and they get no response, and it always eats me up inside a little bit. It shouldn't, but it does.
I really hope you change your mind about removing the comment section from your blog. I'm hoping that the response you got to the announcement might show that your reader's enjoy it. Personally, I enjoy the feedback to the posts almost as much as the posts them self.
I understand the frustration that comes with not getting comments - especially, as you said, "the creative ones that matter to you", but, as cerebus660 mentioned, you ARE very prolific - perhaps the important ones are becoming lost in the long role of posts that you generate?
Anyway, I enjoy looking at your blog AND reading the comments - even when I don't always leave one, so I hope you leave them in place.
see? all you gotta do is tell them they won't be able to comment, and suddenly you can't stop 'em!
brilliantly played, I say, old man!
I like the commenting....
Don't drop the commenting!
I don't comment often but if there's something I REALLY dig, I might....MIGHT.
In my humble opnion, you shouldn't shut off comments just because you don't think you get enought feedback.... It seems like you're looking for som validation for your work. Acceptable... but not neccesary. We all love what you do! If we didn't. we wouldn't follow your work! Please try to get over the comments (or lack there of) and welcome whatever comments you do get! Just have fun and enjoy yourself and the blogging that you do!
In my case, I have 12 "known" or "public" followers and have no idea how many non public (maybe none... I'm proud of my blog... I find it interesting, however, I don't expect others to feel the same as I do. Hell, 2 of my followers are my wife and MYSELF! Sad, isn't it? If you'd like to return the favor and peruse my worthless addages and stolen ideas from other bloggers, please do!

Thanks and keep your chin up, Sir!
But but but but but but
i think you should have a post one day where you have a voice clip or video saying your blog, that would be cool
Last time I posted a current pic everyone treated me like a monster who had attacked an elementary school and ate several children. I shit you not. It was the only post I ever deleted of the 5000+. I think I will live as a mystery figure for awhile. I have enough trouble collecting positive comments for my work. Anymore negative ones and I am back on the water tower with the rifle - AGAIN.
I love your comments on my blog and I LOVE leaving comments on yours!! I do hope you change your mind. Tell me what I can do to change your mind? I do notice other blogs I read and their post say something like "cow" and THATS IT,,,and there are 150 comments on which breed is better. I get frustrated because I really do put a lot into my posts and get few replies, I wonder is it just me who thought that was funny?? Certainly THAT could happen because I am insane a tad bit,, but surely my post was better than "COW". It is confusing. But even if I don't comment on every post (because you are far smarter than me and I don't want to let on about that) I still enjoy them!!! And you!!!
Not being able to comment would be like being told that I'm not wanted at the party.
And I know I was one of the guilty ones when you posted that pic of yourself. I was trying for funny and it went terribly wrong and I felt horrible about it and could not apologize enough.
I know what it's like to slave over a post (or in my case an artistic masterpice) and have... nothing. Nada. Crickets.
You just have to go on. Do what you do and and keep going on.
People read your posts. People care. Me, I couldn't comment on your Ice Castles story because I had nothing to say that would mean anything, but the story moved me. It made me laugh, at made me sad, and a smartass comment, which is just what I do, didn't seem appropriate.
Okay, well I've said too much and probably revealed too much but, there you go. Don't drop the comments. It'd be like shutting down the party.
Thanks Seductress and MD.
Seductress. They are these amazing twisty stream of consciousness works of art. You will never know how much I admire what you do.
I think that is what it is MD. Frustration. I thought ONE comic book fan would comment on my Batgirl/Nightwing comic idea either yay or nay because I thought that was such a cool idea.
It's easy to take it personally because these posts are our babies. And I birthed this one and watch it grow from NUTTIN'...NUTTIN!!! I found my voice and the artistic temperment for praise rests on the thinnest of razor edges.
Pat posted an all white picture last week calling it a snow rabbit in a snow storm and got a TON of comments. As soon as he did that I commented to him that that was exactly what would happen. It was fun to see the comments evolve along that string.
I early had posted a single teal page and got little. It's all in your base and I need to remember that my base is ecclectic and just off that center line. It what makes them so interesting but also makes them (like myself) notoriously difficult to please.
I have comments activated wherever possible, and I'll reply to them more often than not. On Tumblr, you can set up Disqus for comments. I have that, but I don't get very many, probably partially because you have to click on a post before even knowing whether the comment section is there. And I'm always looking for more comments on my blog.
Oh, and Invisible Seductress, I like Holsteins. {g}
Nathan, if I get sucked into this 'best cow' debate it will not end well for any of us. Especially the poor cows. Back away slowly sir, nothing to see here.
Besides you named the only type any of us know. If people start making up cow breed names then our civilization will crumble under the weight of that meme.
I would have went Jersey cow..
Just sayn'
You just couldn't let it go, could you Pixie? I say now that this will NOT end well.
Because everyone who know beef knows KOBE beef is the superior cut.
I officially hate you all now.
I know about Guernseys. There used to be an ice cream place near where I lived called The Guernsey Cow.
Please...I beg you. Stop with the cows.
You mean we've already MILKED that discussion for all it's worth?
Okay, go ahead. Get it out of your system so that we can move on and NEVER speak of cows again.
I hate cows.
See everyone, Joe is someone I can WORK WITH!
Relax, man.
Crink a cat, pet a beer. And remember you have readers that support you, even in the subtropical regions of Mexico.
Loves me my Mexican fans.
