"Sometime the shark, he go away. Sometime he wouldn't go away."
They don't make actors like this guy anymore. Robert Shaw was fantastic in most of the roles he has done but never more so than in 'Jaws' when he played Quint, the sharkhunter. This clip is very cool. The way he tell's this story fascinates as well as rolls cold down your spine. Does anyone else wish we could remember when Speilberg was this awesome of a filmmaker?

You were on the Indianapolis?
That is THE shark story that everyone knows.
Whoa. I was watching this on DVD the other day and this is my favorite scene. Shaw's delivery is perfect.
"Ya know a thing about a shark, he's got....lifeless eyes, black eyes like a doll's eyes..."
Great actor. He was also in another favorite flick of mine. "Force 10 from Navarone" with Harrison Ford.
Yeh he is fantastic.
Every time I see Jaws, this moment when Quint tells his story is the scariest one. His account is so terrible and horrifying--in that flat voice--and his eyes go flat too, like the sharks.
This is one of the greatest scenes in the movie. I like when Dreyfuss's character begins to sing Show me the Way to Go Home. Quint does this thing with his hand as he joins in that is sublime and candid. You need to see it in widescreen 'cause pan and scan cuts it out. Pan and scan sucks.
I agree with Gilmore -- that whole bit starting at 1:40 ... "doesn't seem to be livin'...until he bites you, and those black eyes roll over white..." [shudder]
That and the earlier part where he says that their mission was top secret, and he krinkles his nose and smiles when he says, "...no distress signal had been sent..." as if to say "Ain't that a bitch?"
A classic scene that will never lose its impact.
I've seen it many times and I just watched it again. Every single time, it gives me the willies...
I remember walking out of the theater when it first came out and people were talking about the shark. I was talking about Robert Shaw. That scene alone should have gotten him an Oscar. One of the best EVER...
Genius.
"...like a dollll's eyes..."
Talk about selling the line.
"Ah'll never put onna life jacket again."
Awesome scene, hands down.
In the JAWS doc I saw recently, they said it was filmed twice. The first time with Shaw blitzed. The second time sober the following day, but all was put together and even the people involved couldn't tell which parts were from which scene.
Thanks for that Wings. Now I have an extra piece of trivia to add to the discussion when I talk about my all time favorite movie scenes.
