As a digital/3d artist it’s easy to think that everything you do sucks when compared to stuff like this-a boxing ring scene by Guang Yang who was voted Best 3d Artist of 2011 by the folks at CGSociety.

It's not the fact that it is CGI that makes it great, it is the composition, the details and the story that they tell. 3d software is merely a tool to make these images. If he had done this picture in oils or watercolour it would still have much the same impact.
People 'ooh' and 'aah' over the realism of the cg image but tend to gloss over what is really important -- the composition, the atmosphere, the details and the story the picture tells.
Thanks for making that point. I always forget that but in fact it's the creativity of the artist and the story they eventually come up with with the piece that I am celebrating. I think I can articulate my thoughts on art better with your perspective.
