Need Some Advice From My People

I am buying my Mom a Kindle or Notebook or some other kind of E-Reader. Let me know what your thoughts are on something that will be easy for her to use. She is looking to expand her reading list from the usual diet of immigrants who find romance and danger as pioneers in a new and savage West...or have the same experience as missionaries on some South Seas island. She likes all the drama and passion.

I have a kindle keyboard and a kindle fire. I think the fire may be more intuitive, but I absolutely love my kindle keyboard.

We have the basic Kindle with the keyboard. While the Fire may look shinier and flashy, we really like the interface of our kindle. It's very simple to use and easy to read.

Did I mention it was less expensive than the Fire?

For just books, not web based stuff, I like the nook. Also it's wicked easy to side-load content. We don't have one we use our android phones as readers but have set up some for others.

Depends on where she reads. The epaper is wonderful outside - the brighter the better. I've read my K3G on the beach, wearing sunglasses.
Inside, under dim artificial light the Ipad (or, I assume, Fire) is better, and I tend to use the kindle app there.

The kindle with page turn buttons on both sides is a one handed reader, the Ipad or any other "touch" model is a two handed read.
I often have a cat on one arm, so one handed is nice.

I have the kindle keyboard, a friend has the fire. The keyboard one is great for one handed reading but is pretty much just a reading tool and it does that very well. It also needs an external light source as it is not backlit, but it is comfortable to read with and keeps a charge a VERY long time.

The fire has it's list of apps and web stuff, and a backlit screen, but doesn't last as long between charges. One thing to note is that many of the little 'active content' things that were written for the 1st few generations like the little simple games or Fighting Fantasy type books that use a little programming do not work on the fire as it uses a different operating system. (Just be careful when you buy one that it's compatible with what you have.)

They also have lighted covers that utilize the kindle's power instead of batteries if you go that route. Be careful as each kindle has it's own size and one cover may not fit another one.

For reading, I wouldn't trade my keyboard one.

My Mommeh loves her Kindle Fire. Since it is backlit, if she wakes up too early she can read in bed without turning on the light!

I bought The Wife a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I still haven't used up all my Good Husband Points that I earned for that one!!! (But the advice above about the kind of screen she might best prefer is well taken.)

Another point is weight and size.

Your picture of one handed Ipad grasp is probably not the way it can be used, it's just too heavy to hold like that for long (I've tried). But the image of the Kindle is dead on, that's exactly how I hold my Kindle 3g.

Size is the other issue. The Ipad screen is bigger than the entire keyboard Kindle 3G, including the bezel. So you can put more text on it at any given font size.

If you have a Barnes & Noble nearby, get the nook or nook color-because, unlike these other devices, if you're having trouble with it, you can drive to B&N & hand the nook to someone & have them help you. for free. There are classes (free) and there's free Fridays-you can download free books (their choice) every Friday.

I have both ...a Nook simple touch and a Kindle touch...I like the nook best. it's easy to use, load and you can hold it with one hand and turn the pages. best 99 bucks I ever spent. get her a cover and screen protector off eBay.
