Something New That Is Dead To Me

Now what I am about to say is going to trip some of you out. I listen to several progressive radio shows during my day and most all the stations are currently playing advertisements for the iconic 60s pop group - The Beach Boys and their newest world tour. Five or six times an hour I have to listen to all these b.s. accolades that make it seem like they reinvented music over the decades.

I have never had anything good to say about this group. In my life there isn't anyone that has overplayed their pathetically weak discography more than The Beach Boys.  I hate seeing how any lame Forth of July ceremony or major sport celebration or the opening of a new hip surgery clinic has to include a rendition of 'California Girls'. Makes me want to take a power drill to my skull. Really. Fuck off Beach Boys. When a song is so easy to remember that I can't get it out of my head, I know it's crap. Just because their music is iconic doesn't make it or them worthy of inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which they entered in 1988.

Once again I am ahead of the curve.

"Here’s a group that suffers greatly by comparison. Their fans continue to compare them with the Beatles and that’s just not fair. What they didn’t steal from Chuck Berry, they stole from the Four Seasons. They started to approach credibility when their front man, Brian Wilson, developed drug induced paranoid schizophrenia and started having original thoughts. But the band kicked him out and spent the next 30 years capitalizing/trashing what was left of the “Beach Boys” name. I have more class than to knock Brian for his mental illness. But I don’t mind knocking Mike Love for being a flat out narcissist."

I like the Beach Boys because they produced fun pop songs. But trying to elevate them to the level of the Beatles is just wrong.

I just have heard their songs way way way too many times. I have a viseral reaction to their stuff that is not possitive.

I can't stand them.

I honestly can't think of a group who's music I hate more.

Strangely enough, when I was younger I really hated the Beach Boys. I was a wannabe teenage Punk and their music was too sugary and upbeat for me. But over the years I came to love a lot of their music ( not all of it ) especially the album Pet Sounds which really is on a par with The Beatles - it certainly spurred Paul McCartney on to outdo them with Sergeant Pepper.
For anyone who's interested I've written about Pet Sounds here:

I read your post and am going to download the album just to see if I can appreciate it like you do.

As an old guy (not that Debra is old), I kind of agree. Actually it was the Ventures that started me out listening to 'rock', but the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean did figure in a little. No, not close to the Beatles. Cerebus is right, Pet Sounds was a inspiration for Sgt. Peppers so you got to give it some credit. The Beach Boys were always a little to pop for me. Once I heard the Beatles (and the Stones), Jimi Hendrix was right, I never listened to surf music again.

Yes, Dr. Goat, I'm old too. It's okay.
