Don't encourage him. If we feed him he will never go away. I am just disappointed that our troll is so weak. You think I would attract a better class of asshole but apparently not.
I loved "What If?" series one, back in the day. I have the first five issues or so, back in my closet with the rest of my bagged-and-boarded comics.
The built-in problem with the title is that it's so dependent on a deep familiarity with the Marvel universe. The first ten issues or so did such obvious alterations (Spider-Man does join the Fantastic Four; the Hulk retains Bruce Banner's sentience) that it wasn't hard to follow the story. But when it came to later issues (like the ones you're showing here), you've got to really know the source material in order to understand why their parallel-universe versions are interesting. Still, a great idea and a great run.
No one did the cosmic stuff better than Starlin. He created such a strong base that could support the craziest of stories. Love Infinity Gauntlet and the all the recent Gaurdians of the Galaxy stuff.
I forever stand vigilant to protect this planet from the myriad of forces that are always against us. Be it the octopus, zombies, aliens or the robots my team of human agents, and our feline allies, circle the globe in a never ending struggle for human freedom.
I learn all I can on every subject that interests me. I especially enjoy ancient history because in the past there are valuable lessons to be found. Also, if I ever get my time machine to work properly, it would be good to know a bit about possible destinations and what to expect when I get there.
I greatly appreciate beautiful design. Be it manufactured or found naturally I am fascinated by the process of invention. I am attracted to the unique, the strange, the haunted. I like to share what I find on this blog.
And not let us forget the 'Cephalopod Menace' who, if allowed to, would wrap their tentacles around all that is good and pure in this life and crush it until it remained no more. They are creatures of pure spite. Hate is all they know. Death is all they do. They are our most ruthless and determined enemy.
So we fight. Selena has the celebrity contacts, the cat is ruthless and without pity, Roosevelt's ghost has the experience and I do the wetwork.
Fighting for the future of the planet doesn't have to be a chore, however. We can take the time to appreciate all that is cool in this world even as we cut the octopus into bite sized chunks.
This is the reason there has always been and must forever be, a Cave of Cool. Be sure to wipe your feet before you enter.

I knew the original stories already and if I didn't I did the research to see what the original was all about so that WHAT IF made sense.
You're correct on needing to know the original stories.. with how deep the Marvel Universe is layered, you only have so much time for backstories..
I haven't seen some of these covers, will definitely have to pick 'em up.
Thanks so much, Cal..!!
Love the fact they used Mar-Vell's original outfit in ish 17...
Growing up, Starlin RULED but I've been buying up Masterworks of late and really love the original Kree look of the late 60s.
