Damn This Mash-up Is Cool

DJ not-I: In The Ghetto Tonight (Eric B. & Rakim vs. Phil Collins) from DJ not-I on Vimeo.

Thank to Brother Chase for turning me on to my new jam. And there I was thinking 'Get My Swag On' would never be dethroned but there you have it.

I have such a deep love for In The Air Tonight. One of the great pop songs of all time. I remember it being used in Miami Vice just like it was yesterday. This was a time when pop songs just didn't appear in TV show soundtracks, certainly not hit songs of the time. New or current music was NEVER used in television shows. Miami Vice changed all that with it's MTV cops style.

This was the 80s after all. The visual combined with the music was all the rage but never truly perfected until this moment. This scene is forever seared into my brain because of the music and visuals that went with it. The combination is emotionally devastating.

Here is all you need to know - Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) works undercover in the Miami drug wars. He has just found out that is boss is being paid off by the drug cartels. He feels nothing but anger and betrayal. He is on his way to arrest the drug kingpin who killed his last partner and friend but he has to make one stop first. The conversation breaks my heart every time.

I can't remember whether we discussed the Michael Mann movie version of Miami Vice or not.

It's not well-liked, but I think it's absolutely fantastic. Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx are a superb Crockett and Tubbs.

And it uses a new version of "In the Air Tonight."

The mash-up video is incredible! The crazy thing about it is the synced video footage. It's pieced together from other songs. And it's seamless. I was absolutely blown away by it. And I'm glad to see you enjoyed it as well. Cheers!

It was you who turned me onto the new Miami Vice and I remember enjoying it, Jordan, despite my reverence for the source material.
