Once Again I Prove To Be The Loser That I Really Am

Things the Teacher Did Well:

Calvin, you did a great job on Mock Class 1 . You had a friendly opening. You have an appropriate appearance, background and lighting. Your energy level was great. You incorporated a great reward system. You have good pacing. You used your props well and included TPR. You use synthetic phonics properly. You encouraged the student to speak consistently through out the lesson. You kindly corrected the student's mistakes. You encouraged speaking in complete sentences. You are fun and energetic and create a positive learning environment.

Areas for Improvement:

Calvin, be sure to follow the TD's as closely as possible. Reduce your language speed and decrease your incidental language. Model sentence stems from the objectives only. Be sure to introduce the letter sounds with the new letter. For the point and read, have the student say the sound not the letter name. Follow the "I do, we do, you do" model of instruction. Go with the flow of the student and simplify or extend as needed.

This was my evaluation. I only got 31/41 as a score so I have to do another Mock Class. I am just gutting. I felt so good but this is barely a pass. I have been at this process for almost two weeks now and I just want to quit the whole process because I am just a piece of crap.

It looks like your Areas for Improvement all have to do with the intricacies of specifically teaching ESL -- slowing down and simplifying the number of words used so a non-English speaker can grasp what is being taught. You said yourself that you've never taught ESL before, so these are all good tips to help you acquire this new skill. Don't be so hard on yourself -- this is a learning experience for you too. What would you tell a student who wants to give up right away?

I think Debra's right, you need to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and keep moving forward with this. Giving up after constructive criticism in an area you've never attempted before isn't what you'd allow from a student, and it's not something you should allow in yourself either. You can and will be successful in this process.

Debra is spot on. This is valuable feedback to someone who has never taught in this type of setting before. It's not intended to be negative. They make it pretty clear you are a good teacher. Now, they want to see if, now that you are aware of these additional expectations, you can adapt to them to become a more competent ESL teacher. I've no doubt you'll be great.

I would tell the child who would give up to do just that. GIVE UP before the cruel world eats you whole. ONE BITE. RUN AWAY AND HIDE and if you can, start hording toilet paper and canned goods to give you something to do.

They want you to do another mock class. They're interested in you. A few changes and you're hired! You can do this. You can't possibly think to deny all those kids your kindly teachings.
