Embarrassed For My Heritage

"Residents of a Ukrainian village want to rename it after the late pop superstar Michael Jackson, a lawmaker who represents the village said. Oleg Kislitsyn, a deputy in the regional parliament, said villagers in Oktyabrskoye, located in the Zaporizhia region in the country's southeast, had approached him with a proposal to rename the village "Jackson". "There are many fans of Michael Jackson there. They want to immortalize him," said Kislitsyn, adding that he was in favour of the proposal. Medicines taken from Jackson house "They want to create a house-museum and collect his records there. This is a depressed region, all the factories are closed. They hope this will attract tourists," he added. Kislitsyn's advisers went to meet with villagers on Wednesday to discuss the proposal. The village's municipal council is to consider the plan in August. When asked what links existed between Oktyabrskoye and Jackson - whose death in Los Angeles last week prompted a worldwide outpouring of grief - Kislitsyn said the world was in the process of "globalization." He added: "I am not a fan but I respect his work. He had an iron-clad will for victory." Oktyabrskoye is currently named after the October Revolution of 1917 which swept the communists to power in Russia. The name dates back to the Soviet era when Ukraine was under Moscow's control."

I suspect that this will be the first story in a whole storm of WTF post death stories involving Wacko Jacko. I love my Ukrainian brothers and sisters - hell my mother is Ukrainian - but this just seems looney. You got beautiful Easter eggs and incredible embroidery and Shumka dancers in red boots and perogies and beautiful farm girls who all want to be my mail order bride. THIS you don't need. Its like putting an Elvis shrine in Afghanistan. Nobody is going to want to go to see Jackson crap in some impoverished village that probably just got electricity and indoor toilets this year. Fans will have 'Neverland' for that. I bet that Michael's estate is very happy that the auction of some of the crap he collected over the years didn't go through as planned. Now we all get to enjoy paintings and sculptures of the 'Gloved One' wearing his robe and crowns. I am so happy that he was virtually ego free. How did we not see how regal and important he really was during his life? (For those of you who don't understand what sarcasm is - that was just sarcasm). I am just waiting for the freak show that his funeral will be. If they don't put the body in a glass case (ala Cinderella) for viewing I will be shocked. So to sum up. Jackson is dead. Your tears will dry. There will always be another batshit crazy celeb for you to worship just around the corner. Ukraine, keep your dignity. Everyone have a nice day.

Well said, Cal! The craziness and the hangers-on are just beginning, sadly. I fear his funeral and the process of working out his estate are going to be just as confusing and convoluted as his life was. Sad.

This article about the whole thing is pretty good: Snark: The Right Response to Michael Jackson's Death
