During one of the times in my life (University) when Denise broke my heart I was so bummed that I thought there was nothing that could ever make me feel worse. Seems like I was wrong. 'I Know It's Over' by 'The Smiths' is one of the most heart wrenching songs ever and, surprisingly, when I realized that the poor bastard that was singing the song had it worse than me, I wiped the tears from my eyes and moved on. No video. Just ennui and deep pain set to music. To me this is what sadness sounds like.

I remember a brutal rainy Tuesday in early december 1982. My girlfriend of almover two years surprised me by showing up at the front dooor in the early afternoon. She said she would come in, but never took her coat off.
Then in one big gush she said she didn't really love me anymore and hadn't for a while, and that she was actually in love with one of her professors at college.
Then quickly she was saying how we'd still be good friends, then she was out to her car and driving away.
I came back inside for a coffee and a smoke, sitting dazed, alone, not crying, just numb, stunned, considering calling somebody but not wanting to talk to anybody.
After a halfhour or so of sitting silently and chainsmoking, I walked in a daze over to the tv, and clicked it on.
It happened to be on the channel for MervGriffen, and he was just in the process of introducing a singer with a song from a new Broadway musical.
So that was the first time I ever hear "Memories," from Cats.
Timing, as they say, is everything.
"almover" two years?
