The Descent
The Descent
I got hold of a copy of The Descent 2 and that got me finally onto watching the first 'Descent' that I had heard so much about. I wanted to see if the sequel curse existed with this one. I can assume that this movie is old enough that many of you have seen it if you wanted to but know that my post does contain some spoilers.
The movie is about a group of women who go on a cave exploration trip and face more than they bargained for in the deep of the Earth. It's an above average horror/thriller that actually has a brain and believable characters for us to either hate or root for.
First of all it should be known that I hate 'women in peril' movies but it was a gutsy thing to make it an all female cast. No men to step up and save the day (though a couple of the women are tougher and braver than any man would ever be). I also dislike movies where I can't see EVERYTHING around me. The Cave of Cool while technically still being a cave has more than sufficient illumination at all times.
The cave scenery and the Appalacian setting are magnificent. I can see the appeal of the area. I suspect the deadly creatures do put a damper on tourism though. Damn hillbillies - they are the reason we can't ever have anything nice.
There are too many 'things jumping out at you moments' for my liking. This movie didn't need them. The tension of the story and the confinement of the caves were freaky enough.
Did I mention how much those crawling through tiny tunnel scenes are freaking me out?
First thing on my caving outfitters list - PROPER CAVE GLOVES. Just saying.
Okay, freaking little Gollum guys climbing on cave ceilings...not cool...NOT COOL.
I hated that you couldn't fight the creatures with LIGHT since they are blind. You just gotta go 'medieval' on them because they keep coming and coming at you.
Playing tug-of-war with the creature over the body of your dead friend. Also, not cool. But I was glad to see them fight these animals instead of just getting taken away and giving in.
Lots of nice scares and character twists in this one but I am not so sure about the 'twist ending.

The Descent is one of my favorite movies, oddly enough. I just loved loved loved it. Maybe it was because it was such a pleasant surprise...I wasn't expecting to like it at all.
This is one of the more modern horror flicks I think succeeds. I like it. Haven't seen the sequel though.
I appreciated how they kept the same tone as the original in the sequel. Worth your time.
