Something Else Awesome That I Will Never See

“In 2003 Mark Millar (writer of The Ultimates, Kick Ass etc) wrote in his column on CBR that in 1944 Orson Welles had shown great interest in directing and starring in a Batman movie. With a cast and director that are amongst the greatest icons Hollywood has ever produced, the movie could have changed how comics are perceived by the masses.

The movie as you know was never made, in fact the whole thing was just a wishful hoax by Mr Millar.

Anyhoo, in an alternate universe this is how the movie poster could have looked.”

COOL. Basil Rathbone as the Joker? WIN! Cagney was an old time dancer so he would have brought a Frank Gorshin sensibility and movement to the role of the Riddler. Maybe using old movie clips and modern computer imaging they can actually create this movie one day.

I was one of the original voices that declared this whole thing a hoax. The idea was so frought with historical innacuracies I was astounded that anyone could take it seriously, yet many did. It touched a real chord with fanboy sensibilities at the time.

I forgot that it was Mark Millar who started it, though. At the time I did not know who he was.

Good catch M.D. Upon closer examination anyone who is familiar with Orson's work and history would most likely doubt it. That being said, George Raft, Basil Rathbone and Cagney would have been interesting to say the least. And maybe Willaim Holden (one of my favorites) as Commisssioner Gorden. Brodrick Crawford would have to be in there too.

Too bad! It would have been awesome...

hoax or not it touches upon the interesting history of what could have been in hollywood. Hollywood being the land of meetings generates more "what ifs" than the Watcher after a one night stand. Some of these get so close to being a real thing that it hurts. My two favorites are: Jordowsky's version of "Dune," and Croenberg's version of "Total Recall."

I knew about Jordowsky. That shit was crazy but I loved the Giger and Mobeus design work.
