Quote Of The Day - SNL And The Second Amendment

“When you talk about guns you always hear a lot about the Second Amendment and the Founding Fathers, and what they would say if they were here. Well, I for one think that if the Founding Fathers were here today, they would be super freaked out by cars. You can talk to them all you want about the Second Amendment, and they would just yell, ‘What are all these metal beasts doing rolling down the thoroughfare?’ And you’d tell them, ‘Those are cars’. And then you’d try to talk to them about militias and they would scream, ‘How can you speak of militias when steel dragons fly through the sky?’ And you’d say, ‘Those are airplanes.’ But even if they could wrap their heads around that they would eventually ask, ‘Why are all the slaves out?’ And they would think that. You can groan all you want, but they would think that.

And yes, the Founding Fathers wanted you to have the right to bear arms, but the guys who wrote that would pee through all eight layers of their pants if they saw what guns are now. In 1787 shooting a bullet was slightly faster than throwing one. If you wanted to be bulletproof in 1787 you put on a heavy coat. So with that in mind, I’m all about Americans having guns as long as they’re the muskets from 1787 that take forever to load.

It´s not the guns, but the blend of guns with american way of life.

I agree that it's not just one thing that causes this almost uniquely American problem. The stats are there. I suspect in Mexico I would have a different attitude but I come from a country where we just don't have all the guns and stuff like this rarely happen up here. Our mass killings are rare, not expected.

Yeah baby! Pry the musket from Charlton Heston's cold dead hands!

And I disagree...Do you think the military of the U.S. is going to go back to muskets? Hell no. The citizens NEED to have the ability to be as armed as their own military in case of tyranny.

Again, thank God I live in Canada where the cold and the weed makes us mellow and not inclined to take over or oppress anyone.

If they manage to pass some sort of anti-gun legislation, I would not want to be the guy going door to door collecting them.

hobgoblin...put as many guns in as many civilians' hands as you want but no personal weapon would be a match for an aircraft carrier, nuclear submarine or NORAD to name a few. The moment the reward outweighs the cost of slaughtering its own people for the sake of profit, control or whatever, an armed populace would be the last thing on the powers that be's collective mind as they roll right over us. Giving us our guns is just a way to pacify a misguided paranoia while not eliminating that also very real threat and keeping us polarized instead of united at all costs. The mindset, I imagine, goes something like this: "Go ahead, fight over your right to hold a gun all you want while we and our associates rob you blind and you blame everyone but us."

Yeah... the Second Amendment should only apply to Muskets because the founders could never envision modern firearms.

Also, the First Amendment (Freedom of Speech, etc.) should only apply to 18th century printing presses and goose quill dip pens. The Fourth Amendment (Search & Seizure) doesn't apply to electronic devices like your computer, iphone, etc.

Should I go on?

I'm still waiting for your magical gun control law that would keep me from killing twice as many kids as this guy did, btw. If guns are the problem, surely it can't be that hard to come up with SOMETHING?

And mass killings are an almost "uniquely American problem"??

Are you fucking serious, Cal?

Please don't make me list the details of recent mass killings all over the globe - many of which took place in Countries with severe limitations on gun ownership.

I really don't mean to be a pest on your blog. I don't disagree with people to be provocative or mean. I honestly like you quite a lot, Cal. This is a topic that is dear to me, though. Attitudes in regards to guns and gun laws directly affect me. Current liberal trends, I feel, contribute to the body count in situations like this.

I can't stand quietly and let bad information go unchallenged any longer - even if it makes me appear rude.

You go, Paladin. I like Cal quite a bit as well, but he get's over his head frequently on this.

The 22 children in China last week..? Slashed, no guns, and they probably still pray in schools there.

Gas attacks in UK subways, Russian movie theaters and elsewhere after 9/11..?

Don't even get me started on the despicable bloodshed in Iraq before the international coalition went in back in 2003.

I use firearms in the military, but I don't like 'em. I'd prefer to have had John Lennon around a few more years, thank you very much. But a crazed maniac took him away.

That crazed maniac could have easily have slashed him with a knife, as what that guy did to George Harrison at his home IN BRITAIN years later.

Imagine ALL THE HUBUB and ire here if Mitt was elected..?

They'd blame everything (the Cave included...) on 'anger over the election' or dumbsh** like that.

Jeez, glad we're spared that.

david_b said...

Hmmm ok, we ALL like tests, don't we...?

How about this..:

I propose for the next four years, all of the 'blue' US states enforce strict gun control and an assault weapons ban, and all of the 'red' states allow concealed carry. We will see what works best after this experiment.

"...I kid, I kid."

I was raised and have lived in Arizona for 60 years, I have owned guns since I got my first 22 in 1961. This certainly doesn't mean I am wiser, and I like and respect Paladin and david_b, but you need to clarify that 'liberal trends' comment. Haven't seen much of that going on.

Paladin said...

DrGoat - By "liberal trends" I mean the erosion of second amendment rights by the establishment of things like "gun free zones". I also mean moves toward useless efforts like assault weapon bans - which are largely causes championed by liberals - and people calling themselves "conservative", but who actually lean left.

We set up schools as "gun free zone", largely at the behest of liberals promising to keep our kids safe. We are thrilled when good guys with automatic weapons show up in schools in response to a mass killing.... but only AFTER the murderer has begun killing and more often than not after he's done killing people.

Can't have a trained and capable Good Guy with a gun inside the school before the murderer arrives... Oh no. Because Guns are Evil. Instead, we'll just be more vigilant and hide under our desks better.

I respect you a great deal as well, DrGoat. I have ever since I happened to stumble across Cal's Cave.

It's never easy to discuss these issues because we all all so angry but for the same reasons. I appreciate that you boys can argue these things with me while still respecting each other.

david_b said...

I don't get angry at all, just sad over the trends I've seen regardless of red/blue stuff.

I typically either ignore the more crass comments by some folk I simply regard as ignorant anyways, or typically don't even go back to read other's comments after I leave mine. So if someone's trying to insult or hurt or label me with some dumb comment..., it won't work.

There's simply WAY TOO MUCH Coolness left to explore and appreciate, folks.

If we weren't all separated by miles and miles of internet tubing... we could have a group hug :)

Kal said...

No hugs with you two bastards packin' heat.

Paladin said...

Is that a gun in my pocket or am I just happy to see you?

Could be both!

david_b said...

Kal, c'mon, give us a smile, you big liberal lug you.

"....Who Can Turn a World on with His Smile..??"

It's YOU, sir. You know you want to.

Paladin, I strongly suspect he's one of us.., just too shy to admit it.

Be patient.

DrGoat said...

Thanks for the info Paladin. I sure wish everyone could discuss stuff in this fashion and obvious respect for each other's opinions. Group hugs sounds good. I'll bring the guacamole and chips. I'll even leave my heat at home for a special occasion like that.

Kal said...

Yeh, let me get my bag of oranges into the deep freeze so I don't go into that meeting unarmed.

david_b said...

I'll bring the cigars, but Cal'll probably have me beat.
