Tomorrow my mother turns 70 years old and she doesn't look at day over 55. I was going to plan a party for her with all her friends but she nixed that idea because she said they are so boring when they all get together that she can't stand it. So instead I am sending her to Vancouver to watch the whales (and maybe swim off with them) in September.
Guess that ice cream cake I got from Dairy Queen will have to be shared between me and her and the cat. And I will go with her to breakfast and then the Innifail farmer's market will I will get the best pepperoni sticks they make on planet earth.
So happy birthday mom. I know I am your favorite because my stupid sister keeps giving excuses why she can't get her webcam to work so that her mother can talk to her grandchildren daily. Way to come through as always you irresponsible shoeless hippie.
*On a side note, Bugs Bunny also turned 70 this week. Cool.
I have over 12,000 comics in my collection and have read maybe three times that many in my life so I KNOW comic books. Four issues in, I have no explanation about what is going on in the Morrison written 'The Return of Bruce Wayne' 6 issue mini-series.
ENOUGH with this hack! Go back to the start, get a new writer, and tell me an INTERESTING story where one comic adds more to the next and actually advances a tale that I can understand and that makes sense. More importantly, give me something that entertains me instead of making me want to take a nail gun to some Scottish writer's head.
Enough of the cryptic bullshit and half written tales. It's not cute or funny anymore. YOU SUCK MORRISON. FUCK YOU!
When we lived in Germany, the Beer Man would come to our little gated community every Friday evening. He drove in with his big truck which he stocked with cases of bottled pop, wine and beer.
The previous Wednesday he would come around collecting our orders and on Friday he delivered. You could get a mix of pop flavors in those big one litre bottles or a case of twenty four regular coke sized bottles. The beer could also be mixed and matched and you could get wine.
It was fun because he had this assistant named Clause. Now Clause was mute and only had one arm but he was a giant of a man in every respect. He could carry three of those plastic crates full of bottles with his one arm which was more massive than any bodybuilder I have seen since. To a kid he was seven feet tall. He always had a big smile and gum for the kids in his pockets. We liked him a lot.
Now at Christmas time, Clause and the Beer Man would do their ordinary deliveries but all the army fathers would meet him at the gate and do the lifting and carrying for him while all of them took shots of booze. By the time they got to the last building everyone was smashed and they ate food and listened to music and partied with them and the other German people of our village.
For the kids there were costumes and fireworks and presents. For Clause and the Beer Man there was a big 'tip' collected from everyone they delivered to. Then they usually got driven home by the Canadian MPs. However, once the Dads had arranged for them to be taken home in a tank. I still remember Clause waving his one hand feverishly to us like he was a parade Marshall. It's one of my favorite childhood memories.
These are terrific. The artist has taken pictures taken during WWII and imposed them on photographs from the same sites today. The combination have an eerie hunted effect. I assume this is Berlin but I can't be certain. Check out the link for more such examples of this work.
I love these early photographs. This one is especially cool because it was taken at the time when both horsedrawn carriage and motor cars were both being used for transportation. (click to enlarge)
Another reason to love her. She cares about trying to do the right thing rather than worrying about herself.
"Selena's letter on facebook.
Hey guys, by now I’m sure most of you know that my voice is gone and that I had to cancel some of my upcoming shows. After my 2 week promo tour with Joey I started to feel pain in my throat from talking too much. As soon as I came home I went to see my doctor and he said that I had damaged my vocal chords and that I had acid reflex (probably from pickles). He put me on medication and wanted to see me in a few days. When I went back my voice had gotten much worse. He then told me that I had to cancel my shows and be on vocal rest for a week. I felt so horrible that I couldn’t perform. I begged the doctor to give me more medication to last me through these shows, he said if I went I could lose my voice completely and have permanent damage. I had to give up and agree to not go but I WILL make it up. We are doing the best we can to reschedule all of the shows and I will do a 2 hour meet and greet in each city that I missed when I come back into town. We are also trying to see who was planning on coming to the shows so we can give you all tickets to the rescheduled shows. I am SO sorry about all of this and really hope I can see you all when I’m better.
The show in Columbus, OH has already been rescheduled for November 6th.
The shows that have been cancelled are: Delaware State Fair 7/28/10 Lilith Fair Tour in Holmdel, NJ 7/31 and Hartford, CT 8/01
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. :(
I love you all so much and can’t wait to see you. Thank you for understanding. It means so much.
I have no love for the airline companies. The experience of flying is just slightly less unpleasant than that of a third world jail. I have been checking prices to book my mother a trip to go to her sister's anniversary two provinces away. Earlier this week the price was $119 each way and I thought that was okay. I checked this morning and the price had gone up to $139. In TWO days.
That was 'West Jet' the better of the two choices we have in this country. I then went to 'Air Canada'. Well what do you know. Where they were $119 two days ago they had ALSO jumped to $139.
Those COLLUDING BASTARDS! I thought they were suppose to be in competition with each other - not ganging up to give me the screwgie no matter which airline I choose. I usually go with 'West Jet' because their airline waitresses don't usually shiv me in the aisles the way 'Air Canada's' smiling staff does.
I swear they are worse than big oil and the car companies (who stopped progress on electric car technology) and I bet if I look deeper I would find that the airline industry had a lot to do with keeping jet packs and teleportation tech out of our hands too.
When I lived in the far Canadian north I always had to wear long johns during the cold ten months of winter. I really enjoyed walking to school in the cold. I would have loved to have this set so that I could pretend I was secretly a superhero while trying to keep warm. No one would know until the warm days when I would shed my outer layer and reveal the superhero within. These would also be terrific to wear while riding the snowmobile because of the complete covering they offer.
I am a fan of superheroes and Michael Chiklis. Like a live action 'Invincibles' you can get a lot of mileage out of family drama with this kind of twist. Intimate stories combined with kick ass action. Oh and that plane pilot will FOR SURE become this family's Dr Doom.
There is nothing more fun than a good old fashioned Nazi-style book burning. And guess what? There is a christian church that is planing a mass burning of the Koran. Try to guess what day they have planned for this 'event'. If you said 9/11 you are right.
THIS is the exact reason why I hate religion. It can be such divisive factor in our world when those who believe, use their beliefs to justify hate. This kind of intolerance will only strengthen the bigoted views of those who choose to think this way.
To claim the authority for this action came from Jesus, the Bible or God is just as evil as those who take their fundamentalism beliefs as far as to cause mass death. Give up the hate.
Give up thinking you know how 'GOD' thinks. Seems to be contrary to everything that bronze age book of fairy tales is suppose to be about. Way to be a leader to your flock reverend.
Hey, dumbass, stop stepping on my toes. We neither want nor need you input. The Octopus hate the west as much as they hate you - not because you are batshit crazy but because you are human (allegedly). GAH!
"Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian leader, says Paul the Octopus, the sea creature that correctly predicted the outcome of World Cup games, is a symbol of all that is wrong with the western world.
He claims that the octopus is a symbol of decadence and decay among "his enemies".
Paul, who lives at the Oberhausen Sea Life Centre, in Germany, won the hearts of the Spanish by predicting their World Cup victory.
However, the Iranian president accused the octopus of spreading "western propaganda and superstition." Paul was mentioned by Mr Ahmadinejad on various occasions during a speech in Tehran at the weekend.
"Those who believe in this type of thing cannot be the leaders of the global nations that aspire, like Iran, to human perfection, basing themselves in the love of all sacred values," he said."
This was a very cool series that extended the bat mythos into the future. I love the scenes that show how characters we know have aged and changed. It's visual style was also unique and dynamic. The cartoon's intro is also one of the best cartoon openings ever done.
Building blocks, like bubble helmets are one of my obsessions. I usually prefer the one that are just smooth woods with many shapes but these are fresh and awesome also too.
Why are you two idiots fighting each other when there is a bigger threat behind you? I gaurantee you will bond over a good octopus bashing. I know I always do. You two are both heroes. Act like it! Oh and Thor? Is that your helmet or a ball cap with wings. GAH!
If you know of a really cool site that you think I would like that is not already on my blog roll can you send me a link in the comment section? If you have visited here on a regular basis, you know the kind of pop cultural stuff I like. I just want to caste a wider net so I can collect more cool images and stories to share with you here at the Cave of Cool. My blog roll is already awesome but I am sure there are voices out there that I am not hearing.
Thanks to the 'Invisible Seductress' I can now click another item off my bucket list. I have found my rap name. Now this is something that has been a bee in my bonnet for decades. I needed something original that no one else had and it had to have the right rhythm to it. It needed to be street but also funky. I knew I would know it when I heard it and now I have. Please sit down while I announce my rap music name is now...
CAPTAIN FUNKATEER FUNK SWAGGER
I now wait for your applause to die down and invite you to look out for my first hip hop rap album
CAPTAIN FUNKATEER FUNK SWAGGER AND THE RETURN OF THE REGGAE PIRATES
Okay Tumblr. I hate you. Not ONE reblog of my badass album cover. Not even a question about this new rap sensation with the coolest name ever????? YOU SUCK!!!!
He is not a great interviewer by any stretch of the imagination but how cool is she to still do the appearance she committed to before she lost her voice. What a trooper! This is why she is so beloved. You can't do better than sweet, funny and cute. How anyone can hate on her is beyond me.
I have not enjoyed Angelina as a person for a long time now so I had little interest in seeing her in anything. That was especially true when I learned that this project was originally attached to Tom Cruise. That is the kiss of death for anything entertaining these days.
Everything you need to know about the movie can be seen in the trailer. It stretched credibility to believe that someone so bone skinny can do that things that you see Angelina do in this movie. And I am not talking about the stunt work here. Just the ordinary running and jumping and punching and falling.
Every other stunt requires near perfect, motion picture timing. Where a Bruce Willis convinced us that similar perfect timing was pure dumb luck (say in 'Die Hard'), Angelina's stunts just look staged.
I guess that is what we go to the movies for - to believe the unbelievable that is right there before our eyes. Liev Schreiber and the rest of the cast have the ability to blend into a character in the way that Angelina just can't. I am not sure if that is because of her immense fame or her talents as an actress.
The movie is not terrible. The plot moves at a rapid pace and the chase sequences are excellent. I found the 'Russian defector' plot to be dated, however - like Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum wrote it in the 80s.
One of the first questions that came up in my head while watching this was, "Does every agent have a fully stocked 'stash bag' in their apartment, at the ready, for every occasion such as this? You would think that this kind of preparation wouldn't be necessary for a non-field agent. If it wasn't standard procedure then she is definitely a spy to keep something like that around, just in case she was found out.
From there on every other plot point is just manipulation. I chose to let myself be manipulated, fully knowing what I was getting myself in for. That is not easy for someone like me to do. Plus I learned that a tampon makes the best emergency pressure bandage, ever.
Oh sweet Jeebus this is cool. I hope my head doesn't explode in anticipation. I guess that is the good thing about Comicon, you get to build excitement for these upcoming pictures even though they are over a year away. Synder certainly knows how to excite my visual senses, which we males know is 90% of our being.
As a kid I lived on many military bases. The streets are usually crescent shaped. It was unheard of to be friends with kids that lived on the OTHER side of the 'U'. You could hang out in school but, after hours, your side of the street was like your gang, especially in the summer.
I remember a particularly violent war we had with the 'bad side' of Petawawa Cres on CFB Shilo. We armed ourselves with garbage can lids and long sticks as we rode our bikes through their 'territory'. More often than not you ended up crashing your bike and taking a beating with rocks or fists because you couldn't work the shield/lance combination like you thought you could.
Once, after scouting a construction site after hours, we found a box of heavy ball bearings. It was like we just won the neighborhood arm's race. They were easier to throw and did more damage than ordinary rocks. So much damage that when you beaned a kid he more often than not went home and that reduced his gang's ranks.
Once when we thought we had sent enough of the other side home, we planned a victory bike ride through their territory. To stop us the remaining kids had the bright idea to lie down on the street, thinking we would stop and turn around. We didn't. We ran right over them and rode away with their screams echoing in our ears.
That incident got the parent's involved and soon the inter-crescent wars were over - except for the exaggerated stories we told or our exploits. Good Times.
You may hate Mathew McConaughey (and I, myself, find little to enjoy in most of his videography) but this one is an overlooked gem. It's the story of two boys who grow up with a father (Bill Paxton who directed this) who believes that God is sending him names on a list that God wants him to kill and bury. The two boys see all this madness happening in front of them and the movie details what happens after they grow up. Powers Booth also stars. It's a powerhouse of a psychological thriller with a spectacular ending. Trust me and add this one to your Netflix queue if you have never seen it.
"Michael Warring, president of American Educational Products in Fort Collins, Colo., had his shipment all ready: A school's worth of small bags, each one filled with an igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rock. Then the school canceled its order. Says Warring, "They apparently decided rocks could be harmful to children."... The children will study a poster of rocks instead."
Back in MY day they made us climb up the side of a steep river bank over a dangerous river to dig for agates and amber with sharp hammers. Then we put them in rock tumblrs that worked at high decibels to smooth out or little treasures.
Remind me to tell you of the times when actually used our own BLOOD in junior high science class to test blood types. The worst thing that ever happened in that a few kids realized that they were adopted.
"With Palin, the DNC narrative is already set and, equally importantly, her name recognition is such that they could frame the election as a choice between two mega-stars, not a referendum on The One’s first term. That’s their strategy in November too, of course: If they run on their record they’re dead on arrival, no matter what the voices in Harry Reid’s head might be telling him, so they’re forced to push a “GOP is worse!” message that deflects attention onto their opponents. Hence the constant agonizing among the Republican House leadership about whether to endorse a specific conservative agenda for the midterms, which gives the Dems something concrete to attack, or whether to sell themselves more vaguely as candidates of, er, hope and change vis-a-vis Pelosi’s Democratic majority. If Sarahcuda’s the nominee, we get a real “A vs. B” choice election, not an “A vs. Not A” referendum as typically happens with incumbent presidents. That would be tons of fun to write about under any circumstance, but with two larger-than-life candidates like her and The One, it’d be blog paradise; it’d also have the party establishment, which is eager for a straightforward “anyone but Obama” campaign, breathing into paper bags. No wonder lefty bloggers are gung ho. And hey — just think how much fresh new Trig Truther material they must have saved up by now."
This idea of 'Princess Dumbass of the North Woods' running might be more of a reality than anyone might think. While the Republican Party would prefer her to be their chairperson (thus eliminating gaff-prone Michael Steel and having SOME control over gaff-prone Palin) to take advantage of her enormous potential to get out their message AND bring in the fundraising dollars, they also realize that the grass roots may emply a moose call that would be impossible for her to ignore.
She wants this so bad she can taste it and she will never get a better chance with a media that is unwhilling or unable to challenger her on the big questions. She has so many other outlets like the 'social' media to get out her message to the faithful while avoiding anything that could paint her in a bad light to her followes. To progressives that ship has alread sailed.
Maybe we HAVEW to put the question of her popularity and politcal viability to a national vote to finally put this demon down. It seems the only thing that will unless of course Levi comes out with a 'tell all' pamphlet (no way anyone from that family can write a full book) right before the election. I love how he sorta got her by the short ones now that he has weasled his way back into the family through the stunned door that is Bristol. The article writer was correct. We CAN really have a lot of fun with this one.
The rust and overgrowth is bad enough. But, It's the bullet holes that really turn me off from enjoying the elephant slide. That and that fact that I didn't update my tetanus shots.
I think I know how SamuraiFrog feels. He does these great young stars/pokemon mash-up images and feels that they are dumb but I think they are a cool inspiration. I get the same inspiration looking at a cat picture that seems to talk to me. Maybe they really ARE talking to me. I have been alone a long time so I might be going insane.
This is the happiest story I read today. I don't know why people be hatin'. Someone with everything just wanting to give back to the community. People just don't want to support entrepreneurship. I bet he was giving a 50/50 mix of cough syrup and grape drank when he could have easily got away with a 25/75 proportion. AND, he even got Grimmace to endorse this product and we all know that the 'G-Man' don't lend his name and likeness to ANYTHING. He's almost religious that way. This is just the kind of thinkin' 'outside the drank' that we need in these troubled times.
"NFL player suspended for cough syrup and grape soda mix known as “purple drank” or “Houston drank” which goes for $60 an once on the streets of Houston."
I forever stand vigilant to protect this planet from the myriad of forces that are always against us. Be it the octopus, zombies, aliens or the robots my team of human agents, and our feline allies, circle the globe in a never ending struggle for human freedom.
I learn all I can on every subject that interests me. I especially enjoy ancient history because in the past there are valuable lessons to be found. Also, if I ever get my time machine to work properly, it would be good to know a bit about possible destinations and what to expect when I get there.
I greatly appreciate beautiful design. Be it manufactured or found naturally I am fascinated by the process of invention. I am attracted to the unique, the strange, the haunted. I like to share what I find on this blog.
And not let us forget the 'Cephalopod Menace' who, if allowed to, would wrap their tentacles around all that is good and pure in this life and crush it until it remained no more. They are creatures of pure spite. Hate is all they know. Death is all they do. They are our most ruthless and determined enemy.
So we fight. Selena has the celebrity contacts, the cat is ruthless and without pity, Roosevelt's ghost has the experience and I do the wetwork.
Fighting for the future of the planet doesn't have to be a chore, however. We can take the time to appreciate all that is cool in this world even as we cut the octopus into bite sized chunks.
This is the reason there has always been and must forever be, a Cave of Cool. Be sure to wipe your feet before you enter.
