I think it's time for a rewatch of the 10 hour Dune Saga from Syfy ('Dune' and 'Children of Dune'). I really enjoy this version of the tale. If you like the book and have only see the Lynch's movie version then you need to check the mini-series out.

Believe it or not, I just watched the whole mini-series and Children of Dune. I had some time on my hands. Had eye surgery (vitrectomy) and had to be face down for 10 days. They rent you a massage chair and this mirror device that allows you to watch tv looking down. I not only watched that series, but every other movie I could think of plus the whole Deadwood series. It was still unbelievably hard to sit and sleep in that position for that long
WOW...that would be tough. I am glad that you found something to be entertained by. It would have drove me nuts to have to sleep in any other position than I was used to. And with out sleep the other 9 days would be hell on me and everyone around me.
That series did cover ten hours of that time. Did you like it?

Haven't seen Children of Dune (hasn't aired in my country). Even if the miniseries are closer to the books, I prefer Lynch's movie (It definitely has the best Chani).
Ist Arakis spelled Arrakis? Or that was translated to the spanish editions I read of Dune to keep the pronunciation?
Lynch's movie will always be special to me. Saw it in the theatre without having read the books. When one of my friend said that is was crap I looked at him and asked him if we both just saw the same movie. I love it. I went out and read the first book in 2 days and saw the movie a few more times after that. Now I can't get enough of that world.
A new movie is suppossed to be in the world for theaters.
Bite your tongue, D.I., Sean Young cannot attain the glory that is Barbora Kodetovà. And what about Saskia Reeves as Lady Jessica. Oh my.
Lynch's version disappointed me greatly. Though the mini has some weird costuming choices and a very bad Gurney, I still prefer it.
I wish they could have gotten Patrick Stewart to play Gurney like in the movie but he became too big a star for such a small role.
I really like who the first mini chose for Stilgar. That man has a prescence of danger like the character should. I was sad they replaced him in the second mini.
By that time in the story Stilgar had been domesticated by all the politics involved in the reign of Paul and I was hoping to see those changes reflected in the first Stilgar if he returned to the role.
He was no longer the uncompromising leader he once was.
I liked both of the mini-series adaptations. My daughter discovered the tape in my collection and totally became hooked on Dune. I bought her the Collecter's edition DVD for her birthday.
Children of Dune also helped her cultivate her crush on James MacAvoy
It's funny that the television version always feels so much less cramped and claustrophobic than Lynch's big screen version. Despite the unevenness of the performances I still prefer the mini-series.
So the upcoming big screen remake (in 3d maybe?): Whaddya think?
I loved the 80s film and then I loved the book because of it.
The mini is luxurious and unfolds the epic at the right speed. You have time for all the moments of connection and political maneuvering. I love the way the mini makes the Harkonen even more despicable but less cartoony.
I dream of the day I would have a child that would say, "Daddy, what is Dune?" Remember when I stopped hating you for a bit there. Well I freshly hate you all over.
Only in 3D if they START it in 3D. I am not a fan of the trend but I could warm to it. I am all over the next Residen Evil movie being in 3D because that movie was concieved and shot in that format right from the beginning.
Oh and the thought of the scene of Paul riding the sandworm in 3D is giving me a chubby.
Loved it. It goes into a little more detail than the Lynch movie, and the actors made it even better.

Cal--why do you stop your love of the Dune series after God Emperor?
I loved the whole series written by Frank, and was very disappointed to learn he had died before finishing it after I read Chapterhouse: Dune.
I tried to get into the prequels and then continuation of the series by Brian Herbert & Kevin Anderson, but I felt that they missed the mark horribly.
Any of the prequels and sequels after God Emperor were tough to slog through and I had those on audio book. I didn't have Chapterhouse which I hadn't heard good things about but I really need to read. As it is now, the four books create a nice full circle of a story. I would love to see SYFY do God Emperor. Just to see Moneo talking to Leto II would be amazing. But people would say that Leto II was just a rip off of Jabba the Hut.

I'd love to see God Emperor made into a movie too, but it would have to be done just right to get the feel of the book translated to film. I think it is really difficult to do that with Herbert's style of writing. Lynch tried with the voice-over narration but that can come off hokey if you're not careful.
You really should read Heretics & Chapterhouse. Idaho is still around, and they introduce a new character, Miles Teg, who I just love. And a new nemesis for the Bene Gesserit, who I found fascinating. I'd be interested to see how you feel about the new antagonists and protaganists.
Have you read anything else by Frank Herbert? I thought The White Plague and the Jesus Experiment books were excellent.
I think you have convinced me to read Heretics and Chapterhouse. I haven't read anything else by Herbert. I had heard of those other books though.

Thanks for giving me the head's up that they're doing a big-screen remake. I'll try to keep my reservations in check, and cross my fingers that they get someone good (Bruce Willis would be my choice) for the Gurney role if Patrick Stewart won't do it.

Jodowrowsky could definitely out-opaque the Lynch version.
