T.S. got me thinking about 'The Golden Voyage of Sinbad' today. It is my favorite childhood movies that I never miss whenever it is on. It was one of those films that they showed once every couple of months at the base theatre's Saturday or Sunday matinees. It was such an exciting adventure. I would lie awake at night and imagine that my bed was Sinbad's ship and my stuffed animals were my crew. Every shadow on the walls were new monsters to fight.
This section is my favorite. Sinbad (the magnificent John Phillip Law) is being chased by the evil Prince Koura (Tom Baker - the Doctor Who with the scarf). He races to the city of Marabia for safety and meets the golden masked Grand Vizier who sees that Sinbad is wearing an amulet that the Vizier knows is special. It unites the two in a story 'as yet unrealized'.
After the Grand Vizier tells his tale the two realize that they are allies in the search for a magical treasure and a desire to defeat the evil of Prince Koura that threatens the lands of Marabia.
There is the part when Sinbad is manipulating the two amulet pieces and he reveals details about the quest that the Grand Vizier has not been able to figure out after years of study. That moment is so magical and revealing. We all see it as the Vizier does. That moment opened my eyes to the beauty of storytelling and fantasy that has never gone away for me. Check it out.

Utterly awesome film my Dad took me to see it. Scared the dobsons out of me! Years later I met Tom Baker at a book signing in London. I told him how much I loved that film. He said "Thank you Andy" even though he signed my book "Who's looking at you Nick" This movie taught me the dangers of turning into a seagull...
I grew up with this and many other movies like it. I loved them. I also now realize that I like movies where the camera stays put for more than 2 seconds and there are no shots where the camera revolces nauseatingly around the 2 people talking.
I'm ashamed that I recently watched that entire movie without realizing Tom Baker was the villain. I saw his name in the credits and had to rewind to look at him again and make sure it was the same Tom Baker.
