It's A Hobby

EDMONTON - You’d think shaving his head would have saved Chris Ryan some serious grooming time. Instead, he spends more time now than ever on his hair — the impressive, foot-long, blondish-red beard that cascades from his chin.

While many guys fuss with the hair on their heads and shave the hair on their faces, Ryan’s routine is the opposite. He figures he devotes a good half-hour each morning to grooming his beard, and now, to getting it competition-ready.

That’s right. While those who follow local hair trends prepare this week for the fantasy hair competition at Western Canada Fashion Week, guys like Ryan — equally serious about their hair — are involved in a hair contest of a very different sort.

He and several friends from the Edmonton Facial Hair Club (“beard club” was deemed too exclusive of the moustache-and-chops crowd) travelled to Calgary this week to compete in the Best Beard Contest at Cowboy’s bar, hosted by Willie Robertson from Duck Dynasty, the cult-hit show featuring a mess of mighty impressive beards.

Thanks to Sister Debra over at She Who Seeks for sending me this story. I love a 'sport' where you don't have to break a sweat. All you have to do is grow hair and comb it. It's like brushing the cat and I do that all day long. If I truly wanted to be competitive I think I could take these punks. I like the name 'facial hair enthusiest'. It sounds so much better than hobo.

Their puny beards are pale and wispy compared to your facial hair.
