That Phantom Stranger cover is obviously Neal Adams.

I love that his artwork is that good -- even when skimming down a stack of covers, his work sticks out like a sore thumb.

It's funny how that is with the old time guys. I can pick out their stuff so easily these days. You are right. It's just that much better.

I ask this just out of curiosity. Are there any heavily tattooed and pierced slacker superheroes? In other words, are comics keeping up with the modern world?

There's Spider Jerusalem, the protagonist of DC's brilliant Transmetropolitan, but he's not technically a "superhero" (he's a journalist in a dystopian future). I strongly recommend that series if you haven't read it; it's unusually literary and sophisticated.
