Where we lived in Germany, Krampus went by the name Black Peter. The guy who played him was actually a white guy in black face who acted like a crazy stick wielding maniac. Kinda racist when you think about it. Most children grew up with Black Peter being the only person of 'color' that they were exposed to and the experience was not a positive one. I never felt comfortable about the idea of a character in 'black face'. The look has such a negative connotation in North American history that it's hard to see it as just another fun Christmas tradition. Why would Santa even hang out with this guy? It makes me further question HIS judgment. There I said it.

There's a lot of controversy now in Europe about blackface "Black Peter." Their very own cultural war, in fact. Took them long enough, eh?
Did they choose to work together, or did the chief force them to?
