Apocalypse Of The Dead - 2009 aka Zone Of The Dead

"Die Zombie Bastards!"

I should know better when I see FIVE separate company's listed as presenting a movie with foreign stars set in the former Yugoslavia. I should hope for great right? I mean the former states of Yugoslavia are where all the great zombie thrillers come from these days, right? Well let's just see.

The story begins with a female agent arriving at a small jail to bring in a prisoner who goes quietly with her after beating his jailers into unconsciousness. At a nearby train station a fight over a gun by three drunk soldiers and a station agent release a green gas from a hazmat traincar. The professor who missed his train is fortunate to be given a gas mask before the green gas envelops him.

'Living legend' Raiez is called in to help with the prisoner transfer but he is leaving Interpol due to the death of his Serbian wife and just might not be up for the job. But he is a man of duty and will complete this one last mission for Interpol.

Of course the green gas had detrimental effects on everyone who breathed it in and now we got us a full zombie jamberoo. The rest of the beginning is concerned with gathering up the rag tag team that will have to fight their way to freedom.

This includes the already mentioned professor, a Jesus freak/bible quoting escaped mental patient with military skills, the female agent, her 'johnny cool' prisoner, Raiez, his buddy Dragon, three expendable 'red shirts'. Your usual motley crew.

No big surprises here. Everyone fills out their roles be it living or dying or dying and then living again. I can see the grant money from the Serbian Department of Culture being spent with every blood bag and make-up guts that I see.

Interesting. My cue is the names above the title. I recognize Ken Foree from horror stuff, the girl's name is somehow familiar. The rest? Not a freakin' clue!
