Like with favorite actor, choosing my favorite movie must pass several criteria.
1. Is it rewatchable multiple times. When you see it on TV do you sit down and watch it from whatever point in the movie it is at? Movies with twists are not eligible since I already know the shock ending that was 50 % of the enjoyment for me.
2. Is there some emotional story that accompanies that viewing of that particular movie and is partially responsible for your tears at several points in the film.
3. Did you watch it knowing that everything you knew had suddenly changed and nothing would ever be the same again.

I was just thinking the other day how the original matrix was still ok, but that the other two just did not age well at all.
I like that word, eligigable. I'm using it.
We have been known to pop The Matrix in late at night. The offspring actually likes the second one a lot. I try to be understanding...
Coming out of my geek closet, I feel that way about Dune and Spinal Tap.

'Sniff and the Tear' - too funny.
Aliens was the first movie I took a girl too see. Tara Crandall. We were too freaked out to make out but she hung on my so tight that her nails drew blood.

I'm with VM, except we were those late 30s guys, but we had been smoking since 1965, so we were the stoners in the crowd. I remember we had some very good Columbian that month. We were completely hooked right from the opening sequence, where the letters of ALIEN came in slowly with that foreboding music.
Also, Aleister Sims IS the best Christmas Carol, hands down. I still have a soft spot in my heart for Bladerunner. Another one of those films that had me right from the first minute or so. Others are, The Magnificent Seven, Aliens, The Man who would be King, The Thing (the first black & white version)...the later one was good too, actually closer to the short story than the Howard Hawks version. Love Spinal Tap, including with the commentary turned on by Nigel & David. One of the only dvds I've watched with the commentary. Well worth it.
The Matrix was good, indeed. Donnie Darko, meh. And yeah, I still have yet to see Legends of the Fall.

I made the mistake of taking my girl friend to see Death Wish II in about 1982. During the obligatory Death Wish rape murder scene Dorothy turned her head away and suddenly bit my shoulder. She bit so hard that she left permanent tooth prints in my new leather jacket, and toothprint bruises on my shoulder.
