I need someone to explain to me why there are some kids out of focus to the left of this photograph? Were they not good enough or attractive enough to warrant their own seat so that they could be included in this class photo? And you just know the kid in the front of the right row was getting his ass kicked by the kid two seats behind him every recess and lunch period.

Well, it's an old photo. Those kids are probably out of focus because they were moving when the picture was taken. I have no idea why they are standing there, though...
He was still at the head of the class though wasn't he?
that's why I love old photos...
I look at them and I have questions, but no one to ask.
Kid's head is blurred because the photographer did not use any other light than the natural one coming from outside, hence a long exposure (probably 1 second and a half or something around that) where everyone had to stand perfectly still.
As for why the kids are on the side (I misread the question), probably because they're waiting to have their picture taken in that class. This would have prevented the photographer from moving all his big equipment from one class to another.
