Often I would threaten to open up this can of 'shut the hell up' whenever the kids got out of control. My father gave it to me when I first started teaching in the hopes that I would talk less and listen more. I don't know if I ever mastered that skill.

My dad said he would pay my sister 10 cents if she would shut up for 10 minutes. (10 cents would buy a popcicle back then) She couldn't do it.
