Tumblr Gem Of The Day

"This is a grave from the Victorian age when a fear of zombies and vampires was prevalent. The cage was intended to trap the undead just in case the corpse reanimated. The person next to him didn’t have a cage because he was a pusssy and no one would care if he became a zombie."

I would like to know what kind of person the guy buried beneath that cage was in real life that convinced his relatives it was a good idea to prevent his reanimation in the manner that they chose.

That sounds logical.

I would rather have this and be wrong about the undead than not have it and be right.

The important thing is that it worked.

You are right Debra. After centuries a corpse has yet to reanimate itself.

Very cool picture! I hadn't heard the vampire theory before...I've always heard they were used to prevent grave robbers from stealing the corpses of the recently deceased. I work for a professor who teaches a class on the History of Medicine, and devotes an entire class to body snatchers. The corpses were sold to surgery schools for dissection practice in an age when dissection was frowned upon for religious reasons. Families of the deceased would erect those heavy cages, place large flat stones over the grave, or even hire people to sit by the grave around the clock.

Hence huge locked Victorian mausoleums (think Coppola's Dracula, only Lucy got out).

Cool stuff here in your cave. I took this picture, a couple of years back. Its situated in St Marys Church, Woolpit, Suffolk, England. There are shitloads of them about. Though about 50% were lost during the World Wars, as they were melted down to be turned into tanks and bombs and other war shit!

HEY...thanks for letting me know about that. How do you want to be credited. It's one of those pictures that grabbed me immediately.

I'm ok with not having credit for this one thanks for using it. Because of various blogs using this pic in the last few days, it has received 100s of views. Thanks. Richie.

Thanks for reminding me to take some time to fully credit the creators of the images I find so cool. If I am able to of course. Tumblr can be bad for that.
