I LOVE This Woman

You need to watch the PBS documentary on Prohibition if only to hear the story of crazy ass Carrie Nation who went nuts and smashed up bars with her hatchet.

I love that kind of commitment to 'making the right enemies'. She kicked in the door and others followed her through it. Ken Burns has done it again.

Just look at those crazy eyes. She reminds me of Granny from the 'Tweety Bird' cartoons.

The Prohibitionists had good motives. They wanted to stop family violence, domestic abuse and impoverishment. They saw the easy availability of alcohol as being the cause of all these social evils. But their solution was too extreme -- a ban on all alcohol backfired and really just made things worse. Sort of like today's War on Drugs (i.e. another Prohibition).

Are you watching the show? It's very interesting. Your points are all correct and the modern day parallels are errie.

Actually, I'm not watching the show. Perhaps someday I'll have the time!
