I got a real one eventually but originally we had a knock-off version that came in a yellow box. I forget what it was called. My parents and I spent one night a week for a while at the kitchen table making pretty pitchers with it!
My grandpa had one that I used to play with when I would hang out at his house in the summer. I could never find a narrow enough pen to make some of the really intricate designs.
My dad brought us those great military colored pens that fit perfectly and never ran low on ink. We would listen to the radio and trip out on our designs.
I was given one of those. It seemed natural me being a young artist and all. Could I make it work? Hell no! My designs were utter crap! I was the only kid who couldn't make the wonderfully complex designs. Other kids... far less talented kids.. could do it! But me? I stunk!
I wonder if it had all the pieces. How much was it. You know some dark rainy or snowy day in the future you will be looking for something to keep your four year old occupied instead of driving you insane with her demands. Spirograph was perfect for that. It hypnotized you.
I forever stand vigilant to protect this planet from the myriad of forces that are always against us. Be it the octopus, zombies, aliens or the robots my team of human agents, and our feline allies, circle the globe in a never ending struggle for human freedom.
I learn all I can on every subject that interests me. I especially enjoy ancient history because in the past there are valuable lessons to be found. Also, if I ever get my time machine to work properly, it would be good to know a bit about possible destinations and what to expect when I get there.
I greatly appreciate beautiful design. Be it manufactured or found naturally I am fascinated by the process of invention. I am attracted to the unique, the strange, the haunted. I like to share what I find on this blog.
And not let us forget the 'Cephalopod Menace' who, if allowed to, would wrap their tentacles around all that is good and pure in this life and crush it until it remained no more. They are creatures of pure spite. Hate is all they know. Death is all they do. They are our most ruthless and determined enemy.
So we fight. Selena has the celebrity contacts, the cat is ruthless and without pity, Roosevelt's ghost has the experience and I do the wetwork.
Fighting for the future of the planet doesn't have to be a chore, however. We can take the time to appreciate all that is cool in this world even as we cut the octopus into bite sized chunks.
This is the reason there has always been and must forever be, a Cave of Cool. Be sure to wipe your feet before you enter.

We totally had one of these...if I remember correctly, I inherited it from my brother!
Yep, my brother and I had one of those.

It was made for simple children who needed a reason to sit still.
I had that exact same Spirograph kit. Oh, how I loved it!
I think I had one of these too. I was also fascinated by the LiteBrite - the black lightbox with the coloured plastic pegs. Very pretty.
Say, Cal - do you remember a movie called Damnation Alley, with the cool Landmaster vehicle? It's out on DVD now:

I totally remember that movie from the early days of pay TV. The 24/7 movie channels played all those post apocalyptic cheepies over and over again.
Used to love these!
I would get frustrated often because if you weren't careful, the damn things would come off track and then your design was ruined.
A newer version we got later on seemed to work a little better tho.
I was thisclose to buying an old set I saw thriftstore shopping recently.

I still sit and scribble very Spirography looking patterns when talking on the phone....
Let me guess...you use a red pen and press down REALLY hard on the paper?
I have no idea what that means.
