Another one of my favorite, most reliable actors died today. Ernest Borgnine was 95. In a prolific career, this Oscar winner (for the fantastic movie Marty) played most every kind of character you can imagine.
I personally enjoyed him in Ice Station Zebra, Escape From New York and The Poseidon Adventure. He was never worried about what role he was doing, as long as he kept working and work he did. I can't think of a decade where he didn't have a show on television. McHale's Navy was a great TV series but most young people will probably most remember him from Sponge Bob Squarepants.
I will never forget his boisterous love for life and even late in life he continued with his unfiltered ways, admitting that masturbation was the key to his longevity.
Of course one of his great roles was as 'Cabbie' in Escape From New York.

A great loss indeed. He put as much commitment and enthusiasm into "Mermaid Man" as he did "Marty".
Plus he was in the MST3K movie, "Merlin's Mystical Shop of Wonders", were he gets to say "a psychic is sensitive in that area." Oh Ernest you hilariously dirty old man you!
Another one of the great actors I grew up with. You're right Tempo, they literally don't make them like him anymore. I also noticed that about 90% of all these new actors come from either wealthy families or some parents who are already actors or similar circumstances. You don't hear about any of them coming from anyplace but an upper class family. I'm sure there are exceptions.
Loved him, too. He was great with Bette Davis in "The Catered Affair" and even more recently in the heart-warming Christmas movie, "A Grandpa for Christmas". He will be missed!
One of my favorite Borgnine roles was as William Holden's right-hand man in The Wild Bunch. When you think of him as being the voice of reason in a gang of outlaws, it's scary as all hell.
I liked him in many movies. And he richly deserved the Oscar for "Marty" -- still an emotionally moving portrayal.
Marty was on my bucket list for so long and six months ago it was on TCM and I loved it more than any movie I have seen in probably the past ten years.
I remember when he was on SNL last year and he just sat there through one of their crazy skits where everyone gets up and sings. He just sat there and smiled and soaked it all in. Beautiful.
