Munster Reboot Will Only Be One Time Special

So apparently NBC decided not to go forward with the Munsters reboot ‘Mockingbird Lane’ as a series, but the pilot will be airing as a standalone Halloween special. Crisis averted.

I grew up with reruns of The Munsters on Fridays at 9pm, something which my middle school self considered "daring", to be up that late watching TV (Oh how the times have changed)

I remember thinking about the show's clever pun title "The Munsters", an obvious play on "Mundane", showing such grotesque creatures doing such average everyday things. Years later it dawned on me that I was probably giving the creators too much credit.

The program feed off a love I already had for the classic universal monsters, and since that time I've always wanted to see a primetime comedy that involved monster makeup.

According to Wikipedia, Bryan Fuller, creator of "Pushing Daisies" is the head writer, so that sounds promising, but the revival of "Arrested Development" means Portia de Rossi might not be able to make a series commitment.

I'll check it out and let you know what I think.

AND....They sank 10 million dollars into this one show! How much cool stuff they could have made from the original show to sell to the public and make a mint they could have done! Bad management!

It just seems OFF somehow. Grandpa was not the star of the show, Herman was and to try to make him look the most normal of the bunch disappoints me. The reactions others had to him in the public is what made the Munsters so much fun. The joke they made about the niece being the ugly one never got old.

I don't know. When I first heard of this, I was wary. Then I heard Fuller was on, and I loved Pushing Daisies. Then I saw a pic and was unsure, once more. Now I see the video and wonder what could have been. Would it have been OUR Munsters? No, but truthfully, we aren't ever getting our Munsters again. They are what they are. Anything new will be different. But, I guess a one-time viewing is all we will get. Now I am almost hoping I don't love it, cause there will only be that one, lone hour! LOL

Oh I will be watching. The Lily looks very sexy and I like all that green smoke effects. I hope they redo the Dragula Dragster.

I was looking forward to seeing what this show would become. At least we'll get see the completed pilot and get an idea of what could have been (unlike the NBCs Wonder Woman pilot). If the pilot does well, who know's, maybe they'll pick it up. You never know what goes through those TV executives minds.

Well they did give me a half season of THE CAPE which was cooler than I had any right to ever expect. You are right about the Wonder Woman pilot. We deserved to see it. People's viewing habits are all over the place these years so this one may have found an audience. I will be watching however. I liked the design pages I have already seen.

I watched the Munsters as a kid too, and I think after they released that photo of the new Munsters, the reaction was so negative that they had to do what they did. And good riddance.

In a age where so many great ORIGINAL shows are on, we don't need remakes anymore. Maybe the failure of DARK SHADOWS is the start of a trend where we stop these remakes. A classic is a classic for a reason.

if they want to do remakes...then stay true to the original source material. ( Retro MUNSTERS ) in the 21st century would work. But Eddie Izzard doing Anthony Hopkins...aint no Al Lewis...Just my humble opinion

Well I watched it. There was considerable talent in the production values, special effects, and even some of the acting, particularly when in comes to a scene stealer like Eddie Izzard.

The unfortunate part was how staggering unfunny it was. I was by no means a groaner, it was just kind of flat when it came to the comedy, Grandpa being the only entertaining part, and again thats largely due to Eddie Izzard.

The script really felt like a rushed rough draft with most of the characters left underdeveloped so its hard to see how it could be a ongoing series at this point. Not bad, just underwhelming.
