Don't read the book. For the love of God, do NOT read it. It'll start out so well and just go down, down, down, down...and you won't be able to enjoy the show because you know that the Lurking Suck is on its way.
Having not read the books, (thanks Kelly) and others, I enjoy the show a lot. HBO does make some great stuff. Speaking of great tv, did you see Southland got the ax? I was in shock.
Cal, it's is a show that has a strong Canadian subtext. Capable, sturdy men from the north get fucked over by powerbrokers in the south and rise up to take back what's theirs and make the southlanders pay.
Also, the smaller you are, the more interesting you are. Unless you're a freakishly tall woman.
Also in this world red headed sorceresses can give birth to freaky shadow assassins.
Also, watch out for your fingers and your hands. This world is dangerous to them.
Also: Giant wolves as pets for children.
And dragons. Did I mention dragons? They start out as babies but they get bigger every episode.
As a massive GOT geek since around 2005, I will say-
READ THE BOOK!!! The show is O.K. but it is not the book, I would say the same to anyone who watched Disney's version of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and did not get it. Seriously Martin IMO is a better writer than Tolkien, if nothing else than for his handling of character. I also highly recommend reading his wild card series the fact that they are not in the library at the cave of cool (considering they are one of the most epic super hero books not put to comic page first) is a tragedy man!
I have the wild card comic books and I loved them. The Death of Jet Girl. I had no idea that he read wrote both books. I liked how the Resurrection Man had a new power each time he came back after death. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Great superhero stuff.
cs, I just read about Southland. What a crime that was. That was a hell of quality cop show and now we won't see how many of those story threads pan out like Dewey's daughter being a cop. For sure one of them was going to die.
The caste and crew are right there. Finish the series up right. I loved Southland as I loved the Shield. That was a great series too. Right up there with Justified.
I forever stand vigilant to protect this planet from the myriad of forces that are always against us. Be it the octopus, zombies, aliens or the robots my team of human agents, and our feline allies, circle the globe in a never ending struggle for human freedom.
I learn all I can on every subject that interests me. I especially enjoy ancient history because in the past there are valuable lessons to be found. Also, if I ever get my time machine to work properly, it would be good to know a bit about possible destinations and what to expect when I get there.
I greatly appreciate beautiful design. Be it manufactured or found naturally I am fascinated by the process of invention. I am attracted to the unique, the strange, the haunted. I like to share what I find on this blog.
And not let us forget the 'Cephalopod Menace' who, if allowed to, would wrap their tentacles around all that is good and pure in this life and crush it until it remained no more. They are creatures of pure spite. Hate is all they know. Death is all they do. They are our most ruthless and determined enemy.
So we fight. Selena has the celebrity contacts, the cat is ruthless and without pity, Roosevelt's ghost has the experience and I do the wetwork.
Fighting for the future of the planet doesn't have to be a chore, however. We can take the time to appreciate all that is cool in this world even as we cut the octopus into bite sized chunks.
This is the reason there has always been and must forever be, a Cave of Cool. Be sure to wipe your feet before you enter.

Read the book then get disappointed by the show.
No, you are suppose to sell it to me. Not save me from it's madness.
"Upgrade your cable package to include HBO."

See, that is what I wanted to hear. I can't waste my time with something else that would infuriate me.
