I Don't Know Art But I Know What I Hate
And I think I hate this. The movie and it's references are made for someone MY age, not for all the kids you hope to drag into the theatre to see something that looks this crappy, especially with all the wonders CGI can do these days. It doesn't even have that 8-bit charm like you would expect from a movie set in a 8-bit universe.

I diffidently disagree with you.
I'm not saying it looks like a good movie! It doesn't look like a good movie at all.
But it doesn't look "crappy." It looks well made. What you have to bear in mind is that the trick (as with Roger Rabbit or The Lego Movie is that the logic has to be totally intact throughout. Zemeckis understood that Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse would bring their physics with them out into the real world. The Lego Movie obeyed "Lego logic" -- they never split a brick, and even the clouds of smoke were made of real lego bricks in real lego colors.
And this looks like it's doing the same thing. The game elements look accurate. Like, if you could turn Donkey Kong sideways you'd get that profile.
The part that might be bothering you is the business about how the destruction caused by the game elements "pixillates" the victims or the wreckage. And, I agree, it's weird...but it's a choice, and it's consistent. And it's certainly not badly done. It's very well done!
Anyway, my two cents.
Given all the talk lately about a new Ghostbusters film, this feels like someone making a new Ghostbusters film but giving their own spin.
Then again Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn tried that with "The Watch" three years back and that had mixed results.
Actually, it's a lot like Galaxy Quest.
That is high praise indeed. I don't know that this film will be as KNOWING about the culture it is lovingly parodying like Galaxy Quest did. I mean Pac Man is not a bad guy. The ghost are the bad guys chasing him.
And I kinda hate Sandler ruining something I have a love for...those old school arcade stand up games. I need to download a nice emulator and a few games like my beloved Galaga.
I just meant, the plot device of literal-minded aliens reflecting our retro culture back at us.
That is the only thing that will save this one for me. If they are smart about how the aliens perceive us.
