I thought Kevin Smith had a nice response to Bill's continued ignorance. I am sad to see him dig in his heels on this one. Why should he give a shit was comic nerds think? Why make me doubt your credibility if you can't pay your respects to Stan Lee. Would it have killed you to take back your stupid comment and maybe be holding a good comic story while you do it. Tell everyone you will commit to reading something like Kingdom Come or whatever would have the ability to impress Bill with it's solid storytelling and great art. He will be on vacation in Hawaii. He will be high most of his waking hours. Take a few hours, in the hammock and get yourself some education, Bill. Do it for me. I am a fan of yours and I don't want to see you go down over something you cannot defend as a person who claims to be informed. Millions of people can explain to you why you are wrong. It's not that you are stupid. It's just that you don't know anything. You can fix this. Stan Lee is not the hill you want to die on because you will just KILL yourself when you learn the truth. I would never lie to you.I am trying to help you here, Bill.

In response, Lee’s company wrote, “Mr. Maher: Comic books, like all literature, are storytelling devices. When written well by great creators such as Stan Lee, they make us feel, make us think and teach us lessons that hopefully make us better human beings. One lesson Stan taught so many of us was tolerance and respect, and thanks to that message, we are grateful that we can say you have a right to your opinion that comics are childish and unsophisticated. Many said the same about Dickens, Steinbeck, Melville and even Shakespeare.”
Do you see how Melville gets stuffed into pop culture. How dare they put HERMAN FREAKIN MELVILLE on the same list with Shakespeare and Dickens. He should be on a list that includes Rob Liefeld because Melville is a hack. An overrated hack. Damn, I hates me some Melville. When I get my time machine to work I am going back to kill Melville before he wrote that damned book.

Maher is becoming a grumpy old man (perhaps he always was)
Kinda reminds me of those assholes who always brag about how they only read non-fiction (implying somehow that fiction is just something you read to kids before bedtime and should be ignored upon reaching adulthood)
Everybody has the right to their own opinion but he doesn't have the right to denigrate comics (and comic culture) merely because he doesn't enjoy them personally...
A childhood without comics? Bleak!
