Stargate Universe

Boy howdy do I love this show. First of all it's my most famous premise in science fiction - strand a group of humans light years from home with virtually no hope of ever returning to Earth.

Create conflict by giving the main characters different ideas about how things should be run on the ship and let them go at each other. The civilian scientist clashes with the military commander.

Add the crisis of limited resources constantly hanging over their heads and - best yet - place them on a derelict alien craft that they neither fully understand or can fully operate effectively. (mysterious aliens who want the ship for themselves is also a nice touch)

Everyday is a struggle to survive not just physically but mentally too and that creates the best drama around. This show is very smartly written and cast and uses a plot devices called the 'stones' that allows them to communicate with earth and swap their 'essence' with another person on Earth.

You can visit family and loved ones but you don't look like the person they remember. Just another way to torture these people by giving them only the illusion of home without all the benefits of love and companionship because it is hard to accept that the person the families knew is now in another person's body.

Did you watch SG1? We're in the middle of the 7th Season right now. It's weird cause I usually get sick of a show pretty quickly but Jeremiah and I watch SG1 almost every night!

I'll watch Universe (and Atlantis, I guess) when I'm done with SG1.

Yeh, I watched SC1 from the beginning even though every planet they landed on looked liked the land around Vancouver BC. I have a working knowledge of Atlantis and I LOVE Universe. The whole 'stargate' concept is so strong for science fiction that it can still be used to tell great stories and for fans of SG1 it's nice to see the story still be around. It's like our Dr. Who.

My wife and I are big Stargate fans. She loves SG1 (I liked Atlantis a little better). We are both enjoying SGU.

What I like best is the characters. They are so much more layered and complicated than the other series regulars were. They are more like real people. Sometimes you like them and sometimes it's not fun being with them.

And whenever they visit a planet we get homesick for Vancouver.

That is it for me too, MD. They are not only trapped an impossible distance from home on a derilict space craft but they are all so damanged. They are the last people that should ever be cooped up together fighting for their lives. It's really a brilliant reimagining of the concept. Like Battlestar but so much better and so much more satifying to watch for me. That whole 'be trapped in a quadrapaligic's body twist' from yesterday was amazing.

That is my favorite part of the SG universe. ALL the stargates open up to a planet that looks like BC.

I LOVE SGU even though I didn't ever like SG1 or Atlantis. I look forward to it every week :)
